some teks say to throw casing in fc when myc starts to pop through top
some say to wait for it to completely colonize to the top
whats the difference? does one have an advantage over the other?

I don't know about that tek, but every grower has a slighly different take. I like to incubate for about 3 days, enough to see a few white patches, then go straight into the FC. I don't patch or scratch, and I have had some nice results with 50/50. GL.

If the brick or cake is 100% colonized it will be covered completely inside and out with mycellium anything less is simply just not finished yet. The first times I used casings I did the same thing, all your going to do is delay the time of fruiting. The mycellium is either going to finish colonizing in the FC or just start fruiting early.
I would make it a general rule to always let your casings and jars fully colonize, that is inside and out. when the outside is completely covered on the outside let it colonize for a 2-3 more days to insure that the mycellium has reached the innermost layer of the casing.
I hope this helped a little bit. . .

Some people patch and others don't its mostly personal opinion. I don't know anything about letting the entire casing colonize first but wouldn't do it myself. As mentioned above check out hyphae's A pinning strategy

it shouldn't be an opinion, timing is everything for a good pinset. initiate pinning when it starts to poke through. if it pokes through really fast and thick in spots you patch to even it out... if you prepare your casing well (even substrate depth with a flat top, even thickness and consistency of casing layer over top of that) the amount of patching you do will be minimal to nonexistent. having it poke through evenly all over the surface at the same time is the goal and is also key to a good pinset. letting it completely colonize is basically negating the purpose of having a casing layer. 2finite has his terms mixed up, that advice is good for cakes. agreed you should look at hyphae's pinning strategy, its one of the most informed (if not the best) guides to set you in the right direction. observe your casings and note where they do end up pinning and you'll quickly gain the experience needed to time it right
