why not just initiate a test that has to be taken before they can make more than say 10 posts in the cult forum? I know that would take lots of time and effort...and money...but think about it. They get less than say 80-90% and they can't post in mush cult until they get that high of a grade. Make the test takeable once per week, but don't give them the correct answers at the end. That might also make them use the search function to find the answers. Also, do not make it permittable to "cheat", persay, by asking others openly in the forums.

I think this is the best idea yet! I don't think they should be able to make ANY posts until they can pass a simple test. You could just put all the most FAQs on it. That would solve 90% right there.

How exactly is it hard to navigate?
like i said at "first" it was kinda hard.
there is just so much information one needs to take in, one just kinda gets frustrated at first and there's so many guides that basicly say the same thing just with different words or a slight twist.
which adds to the bulk reading which is good because you get to see them different ways, but for a complete beginner i think it just confused me a little at first or made it too much reading or hard to find stuff i duno....
but i feel noobs could read teks up and down and still have a few questions and they should be allowed to ask them.
as for a quiz for a noob to take, ill add to the idea. After registration have a pm sitting in there box. in this pm have a list of questions from one of the hunts.
have it so you anwser the questions like taking a poll. if answers > 50% then you can post in forums.
but untill they post in the forums have it so they can still PM ANYONE.
then give them a list of people who voulinteer to answer pms for noobs or what not.
sounds good to me?

Meh, I'll bite...
The "test" idea is not a bad idea actually... only I wouldn't so much limit the idea to a scavanger hunt...
Being someone who's read the FAQs and forums here for a couple of YEARS before actually signing up, I wasn't faced with the need to ask stupid questions that I could have easily found.
"Ah, But Zuxi! You asked the age old question of injecting nutes into spent cakes for rebirth!" (I could have read the cult forum all day without coming up with that thread and probably come up with mushies. But, being somewhat "green" to the understanding of how mushies absorb and use the nutes, regardless of information given, I would still wonder why this wouldn't be a possibility.--Maybe a thank you should be offered for the almost non-existent flaming! lol. Here's the link to the life cycle.)
Maybe the answer then doesn't lie (in some cases) in newbs not reading the FAQs (as mentioned earlier, someone can read something and still just not get it...) but actually comprehending them, or taking the knowledge to set memory. (I know this isn't the case for most newbs, but stick with me here, you'll get it, promise.)
My suggestion is to have an Auto-welcome PM titled something to the like of "So you wanna be a Shroomerite?", welcome them to the site, and stress that without research there is no success, telling them that that PM is their first step, and giving a summary of how mushrooms actually function, grow, and thrive, similar to This.
A summary of basics, the whys and why nots, and generally accepted knowledge not included in the facts should accompany a list of categories (using a disclaimer for those in illegal growing areas) link them directly to FAQ category pages based on their desired knowledge (EXAMPLE: Beginner Growing--PF Cakes, DE casing, simple production setups, Beginner inoculation/link to sponsors forum. Intermediate Growing--Casing; Different substrates; Different methods of inoculation. Advanced growing--experiment information, maybe even set experiements they can practice on their own, and guidelines to forming their own experiments, get them asking beneficial questions and put us on a path toward discovery for everyone.) and not to mention a link to commonly used abbreviations.
For it to be more effective, include in the email confirmation/account approval (I know with most boards it's a custom msg) for them to check their PM box for their first stop shop and welcome message.
This idea does three things.
First, it slaps them in the face with the knowledge they were looking for to begin with but too lazy to look for, and seriously cuts down on repeating questions.
Second, it organizes the information on a broken down level so that it's easier for the new member to grasp without as much confusion. It starts from square one.
Third, it would potentially increase success rates among novice growers.
How do we decide what goes into the welcome letter? It can be a community effort. Repeating forum questions, and poll our newbies. Poll our older members--what makes their grows successful? Is there a piece of knowledge not listed in the FAQ that clarified the process for them in the beginning? By learning about mushrooms themselves what has donated to enlightened process?
The whole deal would not have to be very long, and the categories could be grouped into beginner, intermediate, and advanced in a total of 4 pages. The first, the main page listing categories and discriptions, then subsequentially each of the three categories have their own pages of only directional links/discriptions. The pages themselves wouldn't take too long to update being it's just c/p'ing the original code template and c/p'ing applicable links. The time consuming issue would be polling our members, and by the knowledge and activity around this place, I'm willing to bet most subjects would be covered in two weeks TOPS, and the time needed to update of course could be done where spare time is available.
If you want to have them take a test to post, it would ensure they've actually read the FAQ and have somewhat of a decent comprehension of the given information--if not, we still cut down on flaming them for being a lazy losers, because it would, "slap them in the face"
Sorry this is so long, and like everyone else... just an idea.
thx for reading -Zuxi
>>edit<< Clarification: the summary would include life cycle and better understanding--and a link to the newbie FAQ, and of course, update it with any new questions etc >>/edit<<
