Are there any better-performing free democracies?

America's starting to look like a sinking ship to me, in some ways. We've lost touch with the essence of freedom. People prefer to let someone else decide for them, and they don't mind if they throw away rights, individuality, self-determination, and everything else in the process of avoiding effort.
Are there democracies in the world that have done a better job of preserving freedom? Are the naturalization processes forgiving, or strict?
Perhaps some day I can become a citizen of a better nation, and retire there. I don't want to spend the rest of my life in a futile attempt to bail the water out of this waterlogged tanker hauling a cargo of mediocrity

You could grow your own shrooms and dope here in America and not be in some socialist dump like Europe, though.

Yeah, and when they decide to monitor your electric bill and scan your house with those heat sensing goggles you get a new home for the next few years provided for you.

Europe or Canada man. I love America though because my parents brought me here to have a good life but I really don't like what's happening here right now and neither do my parents.
My parents hate communists and democrats but at the moment they hate Bush and the Republicans because they are spending money like crackheads.

I think crackheads are more fiscally conservative than bush and the repub leadership.

You've got to be kidding me. America is very nearly the WORST performing democracy in the world today.
I'd hold off on coming to Canada, though, we've got this nutshit Bush-impersonator of a Prime Minister right now, Stephen Harper. Maybe a bit less of a nut than Bush's crowd, but not by much. Plus Canada is also has a first-past-the-post electoral system, which is a sad joke that was come up with in the 11th century to try to give the impression of democracy while still be easily manipulatable by those who've already got the money and the power. Britain's the only other country still using that ass-backwards system. Even Australia's got a partially proportional system...
Netherlands sounds like your best bet so far.

Good question! I'd say his joke of a childcare initiative is certainly a frontrunner. And didn't he run on a 'repealing the GST' platform? Where'd that one go?

He's getting things done.
As of July the GST is rolled back a percent.
Child care payments start getting mailed out July 15. I don't like how they are mailing them out separately then the Child Tax Benefits, greasy politicking that just costs us money.

Even though I am considered a "Liberal" by most here...I have no problems wth Harper at all so far. Unlike most politicians, he has done exactly what he promised in his campaign.

I'm sad to see Harper isn't offending the Canadian liberals like he is me.
His 3 dollar a day daycare program is laughable compared to a comprehensive daycare social program that the Liberal party of Canada promised. The 1200$ a year is TAXABLE. It is also penalized against some Canada child tax benefit payments. Very few Canadians will see 1200 a year. Some will see 200$ a year.
Meanwhile, the Conservative government has RAISED TAXES ON THE POOR! They have increased the Liberal's tax rate of 15% to 15.5 percent on the lowest tax bracket. (under 35,000$ a year)
Harper has cut taxes that rich people enjoy, like captital gains.
Harper is expected to announce 15 BILLION in new military spending, buying hardware from foreign nations. His defence minister used to be a military lobbyist, no suprise there. Canada is going to fork out an extra 15 billion to buy weapons from foriegn nations, mostly to help the war on terror. This is enough money to set up and run a daycare program for 4-5 years.
Harper took a page right out of Bush's book and has refused to participate in the Ottawa press galley questions.
This is something the Liberals have never even thought of doing. Liberals have always fought fair, and not tried to restrict the other's viewpoint from being heard. The seperatists in Quebec were amazed by (former prime minister Chretian's) willingness to let them respond to his public statements regarding national unity.
Now we truly have a spoon fed national media. No one there to question his sugar-coated assertations makes the tough medicine go down easier.
I pray that Harper and his bozo government are out ASAP, never to return. After Christmas, the Liberals will have a new leader, and although I will not vote for them, I hope they can win back the government from these Conservatives.
It's looking good for Canadian Conservatives these days though. They may win, even a majority next election. But a year is a long time in Canadian politics, and there may be hope for this nation yet.
