    #5782642 - 06/23/06 02:38 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

hey everyone

just curious if polyfil and cotton balls are the same thing? polyfil seems to be the material from pillow cases and isnt' cotton balls the same thing?

Also where can one get this mircro tape that "reheals" it self after a needle goes through and alows air exchange?

Cotton is a natural fiber and rots. Polyfil is polyester filling, a man-made material which allows air flow and can withstand humidity and moisture. I have never seen self-healing tape, but you can use silicone for that purpose (particularly for grain jars). GL.

Cotton was our old standard for many years for plugging liquid culture flasks, and up until just three or four years ago, stamets was still recommending cotton. Cotton works fine as long as it stays totally dry. Polyfil is non-organic, so really is the better choice. However, make sure the polyfil also stays dry. Bacteria will colonize right through wet filter material, whether it's organic or not.

you dont want to use cotton, like mlb said its a natural fiber and will cuz contams.. polyfill has no organic material, so there is no food for contaims to grow on. and ive used silicone on my lids for selfhealing ports and they work like a charm!! alot better than messing w/ tape!!!

what are you using the tape for? if your using it for the top of you caning jar to seal the holes in would go down to the nearest petstore, fish or reptile store and get silycone sealant, you know the stuff that is on the iner edges of glass tanks, yah that stuff it great, it is self re sealing and it comes in handy all the time...oh yah definanly just go with polyfil. avoid the angst  :mushroom2:
