EU Warns Netherlands Against Allowing Cannabis Growing June 21, 2006 - nisnews.nl
BRUSSELS, 21/06/06 - European Commissioner Franco Frattini (Justice) has warned the Netherlands that legalisation of cannabis-growing is in conflict with EU rules. A Lower House majority wants to allow hemp growing under state supervision.
Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner is debating with the Lower House this week on plans to regulate cannabis cultivation. The conservatives (VVD), Labour (PvdA) and the centre-left (D66) want the government to start an experiment to permit controlled growing. In this way, the House wants to take cannabis cultivation out of criminal hands. Donner is against the proposal.
Legalisation according to Frattini infringes a decision of the EU countries in 2004, for which the Netherlands also voted. This banned the cultivation of cannabis plants, unless exclusively for personal use. This is not the case when it is grown for supply to the tolerated Dutch drugs bars, better known as coffee shops.
Frattini was in The Hague yesterday. He wants to try to remove the fears on the European Commission's plans to restrict the veto rights of the 25 EU countries in the area of justice and police cooperation. The Italian had talks with Donner, who is hesitant on Frattini's initiatives. He also spoke with the Lower House standing committees for justice and European affairs.

More fucked up big government stuff!
Governments, like corporations, just wants to become bigger and bigger, and more centralized; it is its natural evolutionary course. Individual liberty is quickly starting to look like simply a fad of the Modernist epoch, and not welcome in these post-modern times...

Not so quick there Papaver
the EU court of human rights has done a lot to prevent really, really shitty anti-terrorism laws in the UK that blair's government have tried to bring in
it's a two-way street

Ok, but they're wrong on this one. The EU shouldn't dictate what people can grow in the Netherlands, anymore than the US Federal Government should be able to dictate what people can grow in Oregon...
I also continue to stick by my thesis that over-population, increasing technology, and legislation for legislation's sake, are going to continue to slowly erode individual liberties, as they have been doing for decades now...
I don't have an answer, I'm just saying that seems to be the nature of the way things work. I'll also be the first one to say that, as a species, we've made some progress in some areas of civil liberties, across racial and gender lines, but in other areas, things don't look good...

its legal to sell in coffee shops but not to grow for the coffee shops, so the people that grow and sell it wholesale are still illegal criminals who can get busted for it, and the money is as illegal as drug money in the rest of the world. if this law passed it would make them no longer criminals

How the fuck are the coffee shops supposed to get their weed if no one can grow it for them?
Looks like they just forgot to make it legal to grow for coffee shops. They should just go ahead and do that and call it a day!

Understood, and Canada's way cool. They have that circular ham-like bacon and all kinds of good shit. They're actually on my list for possible relocation sites, in my effort to prolong the inevitable...
And I guess that's really my point; the "inevitability" of a global carceral-domain brought about by population demands, finite resources, rampant technology, and excessive legislation to attempt to deal with all of these issues...
I'm playing way past the classical nation-sate thing here...
And Micros does bring up a good point about Marc Emery, and Canada's buckling under under to us demands. This is why the idea of the EU telling the Netherlands what to do bothers me. The more things become centralized, uniform, and lock-step, the less room the individual has to wiggle from legislated "norms." And just who are these bureaucratic demi-gods that we are so willing to give so much power to? How can we trust their intentions and their competence? Who do we blame when things go horribly wrong, but we're so wired into the system, that we no longer have options?
Just thinking aloud, but they are valid questions...

The Netherlands doens't want to adapt other countries laws etc. they're kinda pushed in the direction a but they won't break! They don't want to make weed completely illegal in the first place
They want to be able to make their own laws, or at least decide for themselves if they will adapt one.
