ID for a NY LBM
    #5780461 - 06/22/06 01:15 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Ok so i live in western NY and have a yard thats about 2 acres big with pine trees all around the outskirts of it and some in the middle of the yard too.  Ive realized that there is a SHIT load of different kinds of LBMs in my yard this yr and and hoping that eventually if i keep posting pics and lean how to do a spore print and all that stuff that i will find a magical fungi in my yard.  today i found a small patch of really little mushrooms with darkish brown caps and white stems.  the stem was about 2 inches long with small caps.  ive posted a picture of one of them.  they were found about a foot from the base of a pine tree in an area that gets some sun but mostly shade.

When asking for an ID it is considered good form to have a spore print at the ready. It isn't like making a print is extremely difficult. Even if it isn't psychoactive, making a spore print will help you learn how to identify your finds.
Just give it a try  :mushroom2:

It looks like an LBM.

Even if it's not active, taking a spore print will increase your knowledge of the species that grow in your yard.

-_- Dude, it's not like it's a chore! God, I've done spore prints on literally HUNDREDS of these little mushrooms recently- One mushroom, come on! It takes less time to pop the stem off that sucker and set the cap on a near by sheet of paper, than it does to type your reply!

Okay, sorry...

If the spore print turns out brown, it is an inactive Panaeolus foenisecii (which it appears to be from the photo). If the print is black, you have Panaeolus subbalteatus, which is mildy hallucinogenic.
Leave the cap down for atleast 3 hrs to get a clear print (48hrs if you want the darkest print). I'd bet they're foes.

It's all good, I didn't find my first active for 3 months, and like till 10 hunts.  It would be a bit silly to expect to find an active your first hunt (does happen sometimes).
Make sure you read the board rules (top of the list of threads), and we'll help you ID any future finds
