hi. my friend of a friend had a couple of jars contaminate w/ bacteria (rye grain in quart jars, rotten apple smell). the foaf disposed of these two jars and all the others seem *fine*. but every time the foaf opens their incubator they get that same whiff of stinky stink. they have checked each jar closely for signs of contams and find nothing! sooo... where do you think the rotten appleas are hiding?!? the foaf thought maybe a bacteria was growing in the incubator itself and has sprayed disinfectant *all over* in there a couple times now. the foaf sprayed again today and put their hepa filter in the incubator to air it out for a while.. other than that they are stumped as to what to do. help???
thanks.

Afoaf cracked a jar like that today too. it was a very wet, slow colonizing grain
i doubt its in the chamber.
i only assume its some contam, but the funny thing is, its an invisible one.
the grain was VERY wet.

If your terrarium or parts of it are plastic, you will need to soak in a bleach solution. Plastic is semi-porous and can trap particles that will keep the odor going for a long time.
Gak! That smell makes me gag!

You may want to lower your moisture content in your substrate to combat wet-spot also.:)bluehoney

but all the grain is colonized and no bad smell is coming from the jars... im gonna tell my foaf to test the porous plastic theory. do you think the stink is caught in the plastic or is the bacteria still alive in it? the foaf doused the entire insides of the incubator three or so times over the last week with a strong disinfectant spray.
also last night they took the jars out and separated them into different areas and when they sniffed a few hours later none of the new areas smelled (yay!). but the incubator *still did*. so yeah i think it might be the incubator itself. weird, eh?

Look for sticky clear to grey/brown mucus like areas in the incubator that dry out into a white film. Its a pain in the ass to get rid of once you have it... the sticky grey/brown mucus is the vegetative-bacteria and the white film is the endospore-bacteria. You have to get rid of both or you will be right back where you started from. I soaked everything in a strong bleach/water solution for several hours, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat... dry... then wipe it all down again with a 10% isopropal alcohol solution. Anything that could stand the heat went into the autoclave for 1.5 hrs at 28psi or into the oven at 350F for 3.5 hrs.

haha! so heres an update on where that fuckin smell was coming from. not the plastic (sorry swami) -- somehow one of the colonizing jars had fallen *under* the lid into the water with the aquarium heater!!! arrrgh! how the fuck did that happe??? of coarse once a bunch of water had soaked through the filter the jar was a goner -- more nasty nasty wet bacteria-ridden grain than my friends ever seen!!! eew that was gross to clean...
but once it was outta there the stinky stink has wafted away never to return (lets hope).
