Is this a joke, or will it possibly work?

Ok, I'm a noob and planning on growing some shrooms for personal use so I dont need a large pressure cooker.. Actually I dont have access to the stove, but i've got a microwave in my room.. My question is does anyone think this microwave pressure cooker will be adequate for sterilizing the substrate? It should hold 4 1/2 pint jars.. http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=...asin=B00065HO58 thanks for any help.

i highly highly doubt that will work.
1) its plastic. theres no way it gets close to 15psi. you need to sterilize for around 60 minutes, and microwave safe or not i could see it melting if you tried to keep your microwave going that long.
2) microwaves don't heat evenly, and penetrate plastic, so again after extended periods like that you're probably going to burn your substrate
3) it just doesnt make sense. there's probably good reason it only costs $10.
if you're on a limited budget, you can get a hotplate for just barely more. you can steam sterilize jars in a regular pot then and maybe eventually move to a real pressure cooker instead of that toy.
all that aside what you describe sounds sucpiciously like a dorm room. while its none of my business, i hope you realize that growing in a dorm room is about the stupidest and most irresponsible thing you can do.

Thanks for the info guys.. It did seem too good to be true but worth asking.. Hotplate sounds like a good idea, i'll maybe give that a try.. I'm not growing in a dorm room, I just dont want my friends or parents to know that i'm growing shrooms..

Get a hot plate and a PC. I have a dual hotplate setup that I use for my PC. Works like a champ. -Me

damn dawg i used to load the pc in my room, sneak out of the house, and hit the bush with a propane element (35 bucks at canadian tire/walmart). would tell em im going camping. after it cooled, tape seal the pressure nipple and bring it home lol... course it beats the snots out of a microwave, but you can reasonably do it in a microwave with small amounts of clean material. - better chance of even exposure.
I've done it in small ziploc containers (the cheap kind, sandwich size and smaller - like two stacked pieces of toast) and had success, but the key there is having lots of really thick mycelum water for the best chance, and making sure the mix is at max field capacity, cause you'll lose more water with this kind of cook. But you cant have any water at the bottom before you stick it in, or you'll have problems. I used lots of lysol, in the kitchennete, before and after the cook, giving time for the lysol to settle, and during the cook, the cover was twisted so it wasn't sealed. You'll have to experiment with the microwave power and the amounts, but as soon as you see smoke or smell burning, turn it way down. Also, sterilize the food box while youre at it. I used like 2 1/2 mins but my mic is just a little guy.
All my ingredients were standard pf ingredients, and i used distilled water, a fresh bottle for the cook, and a fresh bottle for the inoc. Be careful not to pack it too much (it gets easy to do cause the vermic expand when its hot) or it will grow really slow.
so ya, its been done, take a little getting used to, but it doesnt exactly work everytime, which is why a pc/glovebox/etc are needed for this job if youre gonna go large.
Another way of doing it is using a lasagna pan with a pf mix. i've done it at 275-300 (you only need 250 F, but it depends on your stove so...), aluminum foil, an a little extra water with a pf mix. Again, not foolproof, cause if theres anything in the rice/vermic, these methods may not get it. Also, thick, abundatnd mycelum water will be the key to success (due to a faster colonization rate).
I tried this a few times from spore, with far less success, but im sure if you had like a whole gram of dried spores, it work out.
so anyways, enough of this long rant. just dont make this a substitution for whats necessary, because this method is hick-rigged, and is somehting i did before i bought my own pc.. But you'd be surprised what you can get away with if your careful.

Okay uhm.. Look, Im not sure if this goes for shrooms as well but I know for a fact that if you are growing in someone elses home (your parents) they are also subjected to fines and penalties as well as you.. dont do it

I live with my family but don't find PC'ing stuff too difficult. They're used to me doing strange stuff (soldering circuit boards in the microwave oven etc) so they don't bother asking most of the time. I also cook quite a lot, which means it's not strange for me to be hanging around the pressure cooker (which we've owned for a long time and use for dinner). I just try to schedule sterilising rye grass filled jars and syringes for a time when they'll be out of the house. At least 50% of the worry of them finding any of it left out is just that they'll open and contaminate whatever it is.
To show it can be done without a pressure cooker, here are my oven baked shrooms...

Lol, I remember that...
Staring zombie-eyed at 2am with a hissing pressure cooker about to rock off the stove. My dad always questioned it and I'd always just say "It's nothing". Then I learned he would go to jail too and I brought it to his attention. (He's cool about stuff) and he made me move it to my closet. I miss the cultivation days but I decided in the end it's best to wait until I have my own place. I have a little more respect for my pops than I used to.
