OK, I recently scraped the protective verm from the top of a 100% colonized jar... lo and behold, it's blue-green mold. Can I tear off that part of the substrate and safely birth the rest with a verm casing without worrying about the contamination? I would think not, but I dunked it anyway. It'll fruit in its own chamber...
-ALSO-
That contam made me paranoid about the previous cake I birthed, and I ended up tearing that top half-inch off as well. This cake had no contamination. Will it still fruit considering all the damage and handling?
-ALSO-
The pro-verm layer seems to be attached to the myc. This irritates me to no end because I cannot check for contamination under the verm without tearing up the mycelium... Is there a special way to check for it or to cut off the top layer for examination?
Thanks for reading and twice for replying. Happy growing!

My first cake had about a dime sized knot of the green meanie on it and I cut that part of the cake off too. Dunk it and case it and you may have positive results. I did that with mine and the casing layer colonized without a problem. (Getting it to pin seems to be a bit slow though..) But then again this is my 1st casing. -Me

Bruising is blue on cubies, so make sure that's not what you are mistaking for green. Do the moist q-tip rubbed gently on the infection spot; if color appears on the q-tip, trash it outside fast. Peeps have had success cutting away contams, but it is risky if the mould has survived inside the cake. The bleach dunk is simple: 200 parts water to 1 part bleach for no more than 30 minutes. This can kill anything on the surface of the cake. GL.

It sounds like it is just bruising. When you put pressure on the mycellium, or in this case scrape it, its most likely going to turn blue. Definitely do a swab test with a q-tip. If the colour comes off onto the q-tip, then it is mold. If not, you are good.

You should have left the ones that had no sign of contamination alone but they should still have some fruits. The one that could have mold may be bad, may be just bruising no way to know from this end though.
