Wine bottles for grain?
    #5779705 - 06/22/06 06:44 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I might keep all these empty wine bottles i have for making grain substrate, i thought it might be a good idea. These days, plastic corks are used and could be used as a self healing site for inoculation. The grain will simply need to be shaken and poured out after colonisation.
Only downside i see is fitting them in a PC.
Whats are your takes on this?

I think you would definitely have problems getting the grain out of the bottles. In my experience once it is colonized it doesn't really want to break up very easily.

Once grain spawn is fully colonized, it solidifies into a solid mass.

You want to use mason type jars for that purpose.

Otherwise, you will have significant problems.

It can be shaken up and broken up.

I suggest adding a little gypsum into your jars...

then the grains will break up much easier in the jars after the mycelium has colonized the grain.

the only problem is you will need a large pressure cooker for the wine bottles to fit into.
