Donated blood today, Do YOU?

I've made this thread before, but I think its kind of important. I donate plasma or platelets on a regular basis, and wish more people would. I've never had to make use of a blood transfusion, but if I did, It'd be nice to know the stuff is available.
I mean, really, whats the big deal? "OMG! ITS A NEEDLE!!@" Please. Its like, a half inch long and hurts less than a harsh bong hit. And you can save some kids life. Seriously. GO.
Dont worry about being a stoner, they dont care. They dont drug test blood. If you shoot something, thats another story. I havent shot anything for over 5 years, and according to them, I'm in the clear.
The only thing I would ask, is that you go to a reputable place. Dont go to the places that pay you for plasma. That is NOT for medical use. Its for cosmetics and plastic surgery.
But in short, go donate blood, PLEASE. Not enough people do, almost everyone can, and its super easy.
Plus, you get free fucking cookies.
Free. Cookies.
Anyone here donate on a regular basis?

I don't donate as much as I should. I'm O-, which means anyone can use my blood. Sounds like an asshole thing to say, but I wish I could get a few bucks for some blood. The university I go to is having one soon and I already have a blood donor card so I don't have to register or anything, probably should do it.

do you donate plasma or whole blood?
i donate blood every 56 days, which is as often as they let you. i agree that more people should do it. they always need more blood in the blood banks. plus you get free food, an STD screening, and i hear it's good for you.

I think after a certain waiting period you are allowed to donate. I think for tattoo's you have to wait up to a year in case of the work being done with a dirty needle, hep. n' such. I believe the waiting period for piercings is the same but not 100% sure. I would love to donate but because of this rule I have not been able to in a few years.

Used to do the plasma thing twice a week. The place I went to got so greedy that they would way over-book all of their appointments. Sometimes had to wait an hour before I'ld even see a needle even tho I had an appointment! I just don't have time for that. Maybe if I was a street person with no job, life, etc. Donating blood is very important, not enough people do it, but it's not just because people are afraid of needles.

there's these busses that drive around my area. it's pretty cool because they don't have people hustling you or there's absolutely no pressure inside the bus.
you're in and out within 40 minutes w/o an apt. too. it's a good way i guess.. all the blood goes directly to the 3 main hospitals in gainesville.. atleast i think it's 3.

i wouldn't want to be in a moving bus while some nurse is trying to stick me.
anyways, they won't take my blood anymore. i donated in high school and i got a letter in the mail saying that i had tested positive for HIV and they couldn't accept my blood ever again. naturally, i went to the doc the next day and got tested, and ive gotten tested at least once every six months since then with no positives.
they said in the letter that most of the positive results they get are false because their testing is so sensitive. something like 99% of all HIV positive results they show end up being wrong. but they still won't take my blood for life. plus i have tattoos.
i would if i could.

it's not a moving bus. http://www.lifesouth.org/
they just drive around the gainesville area, park in random places (like best buy's parking lot) and wait on people to volunteer.

Not at all true. You can get a tattoo and give blood the same day, as long as your tattoo was done in the United States. Same for piercings.
They really dont care people. They dont drug test your blood. The only things they care about is IV drug users, people from Africa, and gays.
You can give blood, which probably takes a half hour. Plasma takes a bit longer, like an hour, 'cause they pump your blood out, run it through a centrifuge, and give it back. You can also do platelets, but that takes almost 3 hours, and involves 2 needles. (!)

From the American Red Cross
"Tattoo
Wait 12 months after a tattoo if the tattoo was applied in a state that does not regulate tattoo facilities. This requirement is related to concerns about hepatitis. Learn more about hepatitis and blood donation.
Acceptable if the tattoo was applied by a state-regulated entity using sterile technique. Only a few states currently regulate tattoo facilities, so most donors with tattoos must wait 12 months after tattoo application before donating blood. You should discuss your particular situation with the health historian at the time of donation
Piercing (ears, body), Electrolysis
Acceptable as long as the instruments used were sterile, one time use.
Wait 12 months if there is any question whether or not the instruments used were sterile and free of blood contamination. This requirement is related to concerns about hepatitis"

Most blood centers, those affiliated w/ hospitals, are non-profit. I'm not sure how you think they could "give" blood away. Obviously, there is a high cost involved in the process. Nurses dont come cheap, sterile medical equipment is not cheap, and some of the machines used are damned high tech. I know the apherisis machine they hook me up too looks like a piece of space station equipment.
I'm sure it would be nice if doctors donated time, companies donated equipment AND I donated blood, but the only part I can accomplish is the last.
