Definitely don't try to connect a CPU fan directly to a wall outlet. The fans probably need 9V or 12V (be sure to check which), and the wall supplies 120V. The wires in the fan would most likely immediately melt down and catch fire.

Also, wall outlets supply alternating current (AC), while the fan needs direct current (DC). There's no way it could work. =/

i am not the britest guy but i thought i read some where that some one hooked up a power supply from like a cell fone changer or what ever to the computer fan. guess it worked. i have 1-2 computer fans laying around with wall plugs dont sure they where my step dads, dads fans.

going to bed now will get a pic up tomorrow

(and they work) no prob with them but i use they to blow air in my repti. cages.

A cell phone charger isn't a bad idea; that would work if it is the right voltage.

Pretty much any time you have a power adapter / cord that connects to a wall socket and some electronic device and has a heavy box somewhere in the middle, what you have is a transformer that converts AC to DC.

So anything like one  of    these things is a transformer: they take AC from the wall and spit out DC at the end that connects to the device.

Now all of these have the voltage they put out on the DC end written on the box part. If you look closely at the second link you will see that it produces 9V. The third one produces 8V. The fans may have the voltage they need written on them as well.

So if you happen to find a transformer that produces the same voltage the fans need, you can wire the fan right up to it and it should work fine. If you don't have any transformers lying around that you want to butcher, you could get one of these configurable ones which can produce several voltages. Much cheaper than a PC power supply.

So yeah, you're on the right track with the cell phone charger idea.

I don't think fans will be such a good idea anymore; the humidity in the chamber will have an exit. Currently I am using cups of ice to cool the FC down.

Those ultrasonics have a way bigger fan on them than a pc and the element can pump out a ton of water. In my experience, their almost too much, like a fog where everything is wet, instead of humid air. I tried running a FC with a little one and with an outlet, everything just got wet. filling a sealed chamber with fog was better, but still too much, too fast. in the end i used a fogger, the kind you can put in a bowl of water. as soon as the chamber started to fill with fog i stopped, cause thats when the air was at saturation, otherwise the fog would rolloff and disappear, meeting with the drier air in the chamber. Realistically though, the cheapest and most effective method is just a nice 1/2", saturated vermic and/or perlite bed and a jar full of water with a fish bubbler in it. little sprits from a spray bottle between openings and it was all good to go. You can even substitute the bed with water crystals but i havent tried that yet.

Could you explain why you don't recommend ice? It did a nice job dropping the temperature 5 degrees.

Also when I open the FC, it is hard to make out any foggy characteristics. I do feel the humidity, but the only sign of humidity by the eye is the collection of moisture on the surface of the FC (inside of course).

well... i dont just cause it takes up floor space, and i dont normally monitor, i just set a stat  . but if you know what your doing then ice can work well yes.

as for the foggyness, its the fog that rolls off an ultrasonic element. when the FC looks like a foggy london street, its just oversaturated, cause you can see the water. thats why i cut the fogger when i see too much fog, cause it just makes everything wet, and causes puddles. you only want a little fog at the base of the fc, really. at that point, its not gonna get much more humid, and its gonna start getting wet.

can anyone help me support this or am i on a rant?
