Fruiting in the heat
    #5777717 - 06/21/06 07:26 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Hello. Recently, summer has hit and the edifice that I live in gets up to 90 degrees F and above (no A/C). My question is: How does one go about fruiting when temperatures are equal to and greater than that of colonizing? Cold shock? Or perhaps there is some cooling method I haven't thought of..?

Thanks for any help

Frozen bottle(s) of ice can help lower it a few degrees.

Investing in humidifiers may help as well. Or you can buy a cheap AC and throw it on a timer. Goodwill or something should have some old pieces of junk laying around.

You can make a ghetto swamp cooler by simply blowing a fan across a wet bath towel. The catch is you have to keep wetting the towel as it dries out.

Fortunately, if you're growing cubes, they fruit ok at 90F, just like they do in the cow pastures in Texas.

I personally have not been able to fruit in those temp ranges. For me they just keep on growing. I had to install an AC unit for things to work.

But it could be the "cold shock" of going from 87F to 74F.

I had ample FAE, and light, etc...

If you have no way of cooling, don't worry about it. You might not get the best out of your cakes/casing but you should get something. Give it a shot and let us know what happens...

i rarely find cubies in TX when its been over 90 degrees, maybe a handful. they come out in force after brief cool/wet spells... like you wouldnt believe.
and people in texas still buy cubes for $10/gm... haha.

i use a window unit AC to keep my room down to 75. its worth it, high temps slow everything down sooo much.
can you run a window unit inside, without putting it in the window?
