When I first started with my heatbomb I was pretty frustrated too. A few things I learned:
1. Always use something plastic, or at least something that does not insulate. You don't want to keep the heat inside the bottle which is what happens when you use glass. Wrapping an insulator like aluminum foil around the bottle will simply make the problem worse.
2. Lay the heatbomb on it's side. I found the heat distributes faster and more equally this way.
3. Remember, this is a fairly low-tech way to distribute the heat from the heater to the water to the plastic to the air to the jars to the myc itself. It can take a while. Heatbombs are FAR better-suited for maintaining heat than they are at building them. It can take a long time for the heat to get up to the low 80's if it's cold in the room.
4. Test your thermometer by turning it on and putting it in a large glass. Leave a thermometer in the glass and monitor for a while. Clearly a water heater labeled 88F should be able to bring a volume this small to 88F, no?
If it doesn't, it's defective. So...
If the heater warms the glass to 88F (or very very close), and you use plastic, and your Igloo doesn't have a huge-ass hole in it, and you wait a few hours ...the insides of your Igloo will be in the 80's if not higher.

not to mention 50watts is a baby heater.. get a bigger one. I have a 100watt and it barely gets to the temp that i want. Also it takes about 10 hundred minutes times 4 to get tehre, but once it's there it stays very stable.
