natural habitat... grass, with pine trees close by, western kentucky.... the cap feels like a soft sort of plastic, the stem is very wood like... meaty, hard and solid... the gills are free, as you can tell from the picture... no sort of veil is present and the root is the same texture as the stem... very distiguished root... another one is growing a couple feet away... anybody have an idea what it is?

Hey venus....
Really nice nice pics.....cool shrooms alright....probably Pluteus
Dont eat this because there are many deadly lookalikes
Go ahead and cut the stem off and lay cap gills down on paper and see what color it leaves of the ultra fine powder (spores) behind on the paper first then come back and let us know what color.....it should leave a pinkish to salmon colored spore print and it may take awhile of leaving it on the paper but could be fairly quik with these shrooms

It's already been in the drying process for a couple hours... can you still get a spore print? it's not anywhere near entirely dry yet, but I went ahead and proceeded... it's on paper now...

Maybe with your finger remoisten the cap with water but not enough so it runs off and maybe place a bowl over it as this can sometimes speed it.......if too dry may take overnight or not at all (did I just hear someone say DAMN all night ???? )......but Pluteus usually print quik if even somewhat fresh.....

Well if it has a white spore print I am thinking it may be the same thing I found not to long ago, Tricholomopsis platyphylla not active, and not edible, although some books state that it is edible there are many reports of it causing adverse reactions. If it returns the flesh, salmony colour then I go with Pluteus cervinus
