Can I Eat Them If The Mycellium Is Mouldy?
    #5775581 - 06/21/06 08:16 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I've been growing Koh Samui and I think I had a duff syringe as all 3 of the substrate bags have green mould and I suspect cobweb mould. They must be strong mushrooms because for a long time the mycellium kept managing to fight of the mould and it would disappear and then come back. Two of the bags have produced about 150g of beautiful looking mushrooms but the mycellium itself is mouldy. Are these safe to eat? I don't want to make myself ill. I read somewhere that the mushrooms can absorb toxins from the mould?

Don't eat mold. However, the mushrooms themselves if there is no mold on them are safe to eat. Wild mushrooms exist in nature with all sorts of molds and bacteria, and commercial mushroom farms certainly don't toss out the fruits from substrates with moulds, nor to the health regulators require or expect them to.

It's still best to toss out any substrate you see at the very first sign of green. Keeping them only reduces the chances you can have future successful grows due to the huge amount of contaminant spores that will be spit out everywhere.

i personally wouldn't risk it. of course i'm paranoid. but the way i look at is that the myco network is very interconnected.
