Experiment Page/Subforum Idea (Please comment!) (Poll added)
    #5775334 - 06/21/06 02:26 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

i had an idea for an experiment page/subforum. there are so many things in this hobby with varying opinions; WBS or rye, time to PC, LC medium, casing recipe, etc. this section would be where people post their experiments. these don't have to be lab quality experiments, the main point being that everything is uniform except for the variable that ur testing.

for example, my friend just experimented with using WBS, rye, or millet (i will post this experiment soon by the way). everything was the exact same, except what the jar contained.

another example my friend did was to test whether 5ml, 10ml, or 15ml of karo works best in 100ml of water (again will post results shortly)

after completing an experiment, u could post in the appropriate subsection with a title clearly identifying what u were testing. Example: "LC: Karo: 100ml water: 5, 10, or 15 ml karo"

now u may say this takes the experimenting out of it for the individual. well i thought about that, but then i realized how many billions of variables exist in each aspect of cultivation, that it would be impossible to get it down to a step by step directions for best yield in the shortest amount of time requiring the least amount of work.

the point? it would be nice to have an idea of what works best in certain situations so that u can do ur experimenting in other areas.

the other thing that would be cool is that people could do the same experiment as someone else either to help prove its accuracy, or if they disagree, to try and disprove it. Example: My friend's experiment shows that overall WBS is the best of the 3. You are a rye fanatic. Do an experiment to prove rye is better, but remember, be unbiased and make all the other conditions the same.

anyways, i think u get the idea of my idea. please let me know ur thoughts, and hopefully the MODs see this, since without their interest and help nothing can come of this.

***EDIT*** I added a poll, it is the 7th post down ***EDIT***

I actualy think it is a very good idea. We all do different veryations on our teks and this will give some of us new ideas to try and let some of the newbies see what has been tested and proven to help. For example replacing a 1/4 of the water in the pf-tek with coffee water to help speed up colonization times. I would vote to have it. Good Idea

I agree with you. This forum gets way too much traffic. Posts get buried after less than an hour or two most of the time. UBB doesn't have a good way to track your active threads so tons of posts that I would like to check back on get buried and forgotten because I don't have the time to check back on them constantly to see if there is anything new posted.

The grow logs forum sort of fits your description, but it's not quite the same. It would be nice to have a forum to post, rather than request, info. It would be a good place for experimental results to be posted and peer review to be conducted. I also think this forum should be split into two forums. One just for noobs and PF tek and the other for general cultivation. Sometimes I in the mood to help noobs, other times I'm wanting to learn new things and advance my knowledge. But it sucks for both goals to have to wade through both types and have threads get buried long before most people get a chance to see them. I can't imagine all the great threads I've missed due to them getting buried.

You should add a poll to your post to gauge interest and/or convince the mods.

5 shrooms for you psychocactustrip for a good idea.  The shroomery needs more science and controlled experimentation.

Guitarman I'm in a good mood and you seem to have some sense so I'll get you started too!

thanks, my first ratings! ok so i am adding a poll in posting this since it wont let me edit one into the original post, hopefully it works!
Would you find a separate 'experiments' page/subforum useful?
You may choose only one

isn't that what the advanced forum is for?

the advanced forum is the same as this forum but for more advanced techniques. an experiment forum would strictly be for posting completed experiments that show some kind of result.

people could post questions and comments in that specific thread, but not in a thread of its own, that way discussion on that particular experiment can happen, but it won't clutter up the forum.

one of the main purposes of this is to lessen the posts of long-time discussions such as best grain to use etc, stuff that i see people asking about and telling about all the time. i am sure a lot of these people with opinions have not done a uniform experiment. maybe they have done WBS at one time and rye at another, deciding one is better, but most likely between times they changed other variables.

granted these experiments are not full on scientific, some may still be up for discussion as to the accuracy. if someone disagrees with the results, they should do the exact same experiment and post their own results.

once again, this would all minimize the clutter of newbies asking questions that are already answered, as well as discussion that has already taken place. many times they ask because there are different answers to the same question, and they aren't sure of who's opinion is best to go by.

please comment and vote on what u think of this idea!

That sounds like an awesome idea. I think a section like that could grow to be an important part of the shroomery.

I think that it is a great idea.  A lot of people who do experiment would probably enjoy having a place to post them.  Also a lot of people will most likely want to have a forum that they can go to just to read about these experiments.  I know I would

ok well it looks like a lot of people would find this useful, should i message the MODs and see what they think, or what is the next step to making this happen?

> should i message the MODs and see what they think

I would do that. I would also start a post in the "Website Announcements and Feedback" forum.

I think it's a really good idea and it seems like most other people do too. But despite popular support nothing is going to happen unless you bug the admins and mods, and keep posting about it.

The same reason that makes this such a good idea also means that every couple hours your idea and this post gets buried under a couple dozen noob posts asking that same questions over and over.

and over , over , and over agn(lol) I remember when I was new too. I did alot of reading tho so I wouldn`t have to post basic questions. But patiencs is the key with our hobby guys. I still think this would be a wonderful idea for the forums tho.
