Hey there fellow shroomers. I have been a member here for awhile, but everytime i think of something to post I pretty much just spend hours reading all the other posts and whatnot. It's great to pass the time!!! So my roommate and I searched Wheeling/Bethany, WV high and low looking for the elusive blue foot and found nothing. This year a friend gave me some clues on how to find a patch. Luckily we used the clues and found the spot. It rained slightly a couple days before our first hunt, and we picked about an oz. (That was about 2 weeks ago). I have returned several times since then to check and see if more had grown, but each time I haven't found anyting (not even an LBM). It did rain just yesterday, but it was just scattered showers. My question is, is it getting too late (hot) in the year to pick this species? Or am I just not going at the right time? IDK??? The Blue foots have been growing in this spot for years and we just picked some so i know they should be there, it's supposed to rain for the next 5-6 days. Do you think I will have better luck after the rain???The avg. Temp for my part of WV ib about 70-80 degrees daily.
Also, I was given very specific details about this spot (look right by the white and yellow camper) and thats right where we found them, but nowhere else in the area, just in this one specific spot. It is right by a little creek and im wondering if I should branch out in this general area and broaden my hunt. Or should I just stick to the spot i know? The only reason im asking this is because the spot has this quality about is that other parts of the area dont have (covered from mostly all sunlight, kind of marshy, and lots of decayed logs). Well I know this post is kind of lengthy but i had pretty much given up hope last year when I didn't find a single active after days and days and days of hunting, but after picking my first active 2 weeks ago my hope has been restored and then qucikly shut down. You guys seem to know pretty much everything there is about mushrooms, and any help is much appreciated.
PS: any fellow West Virginians in here, I'd like to here from ya

Its been too dry here. Give it 4 or five days after a good rain. I found my first bluefoot this year, and since them have found them in a total of ten locations up and down the Ohio river, and along streams feeding into the river.
Study well the habitat where you find them. P. caerulipes occupies a very selective natural habitat, but if you find that habitat in bluefoot country, you are very likely to find them there.

I found them near a stream (stream was on the other side of the road than where I found the patch). Like I said above it was a heavily wooded patch (as in there wasn't much sunlight getting to the floor) it was kind of marshy and when I first found them they were growing everywhere and on everything (on decayed logs, moss, and str8 outta the ground). I'll take some habitat (and hopefully specimen) shots next time I venture into blue foot country. Man, I just noticed how many parenthesis I used in my 1st 2 posts....oh well, they make for more detailed information
any fellow west virginians in here?? i'd love to hear about your shrooming adventures and possibly organize a hunt AIM:Rastausty Gmail:Rastausty@gmail.com

Hey dude, I'm in the exact same position as you. I found some the other week after some rain here in PA, and I'm waiting for the rain to come around to do some more scouting.
If you're interested, here some pics of the ones I found, and the other I think is a wine cap.

I checked my spots the last week and it hasnt rained very much here in PA in about two. I havent had a good haul in over three weeks when I found about an ounce of fresh blue feet. they are very selective on their location as Dan said and I have looked alot and only found three locations. I always check about 3 days after a soaking rain (downpour) and my spots flourish almost immediately after the rain.
Happy Hunting!

Well I checked again today and observed some nice specimens, didn't do any picking because I figured that if i just tapped the caps i'd let those spores just do their thang!! Looks like rain for ther next couple days......the anticipation builds!!

went out to my spot today and found lots of mushies. I have some pics on my phone but i can't upload them right now because im in a small little town and can't get PCS service, but i will get them up soon. I found a couple definite blue foots and a lot of shrooms growing beaside them , but they did nt look like most of the blue foots i have found. The are still mature though. A lot of them looked like cultivated blue foots I have seen pic of but idk for sure. I've heard that blue foots can have many diferent looks about them. Oh well I will upload the pics assoon as i get outta this little town im in (probly tonight). Peace

They look quite brown to me, like chocolate maybe just a tint of purple but not really noticeable upon first glance
Im having my doubts that these are blue foots, but I would just like to know what the hell these little buggers are
