How is everyone dealing with standing water @ the bottom of martha?
    #5773191 - 06/20/06 05:09 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I poked a couple holes in the bottom of the martha by accident while putting a shelf inside her.
But still, I saw today there is a considerable buildup of water at the bottom. I am concerned now about the downstairs neighbors and water seeping down.

has anyone thought of something ingenious? I could just syphon it out but that's hardly automatic.

Put a big oil pan underneath the whole thing to catch the water. Dump the water out periodically or suck it up with a wet/dry vac.

My greenhouse floor stays totally dry. Where is the excess water coming from? Perhaps you're running the humidifiers too long? I find the air in a greenhouse can only absorb so much moisture in a given time. If you can reduce the 'on' time of your cool mist to one minute or less, very little water should ever drip. Then, just cycle as needed to maintain humidity.

most likely, it's the ultrasonic. it's on a cheap timer that has pins for on/off settings... the pins are as close as possible but it still comes on for a good 15-20 mins at a time. A better timer would help..
the coolmist is on all the time though, and if the hose doesn't have a drip loop the hose itself will fill with water.

don't know if i'll be able to get a timer but when i'm out tomorrow i'll try and get a low pan from the dollar store. The problem is there's not much room at all under there, a lasagna pan didn't last long at all because I had to crush it down to fit it under there.

Condensation is one issue.

True, but condensation can only form if the humidity is 100% OR there is a temperature differential between inside and outside. Proper air exchange will correct any temperature differential, but people need to realize that a greenhouse isn't appropriate for pf style cakes because they require a very high humidity. Cased substrates do very well in the 80% range which should not result in condensation.

I know from experience if I allow the cool mists to run for more than two minutes, they begin to drip because the air can't absorb the moisture as fast as one of those can put it out. However, you can run them one minute on, then two to ten minutes off and get 80 to 90 percent humidity with no drips. It takes a good cycle timer to do it, but the results are worth it.

There is most always a slight temp difference between the inside and out side of most FC's just something to consider besides over humidifying. I agree it's higher than necessary RH BTW and thats the way I like it because it helps reduce the water demand placed on the substrate/casing and reduces shrinkage noticeably for those who don't want to bother with dunking casings. I've many times went 7-8 flushes without ever dunking. Call me lazy
