When to deep scratch

So I've got some half pints of B+ and Taz and am going to case. My question is, about how much of the casing should be colonized before I deep scratch? And also, should I incubate these casings for lets say, five days or so before I put them in my terrarium. I particularly want to know what Anno has to say about this, I have a lot of respect for the guy. But any advice is much appreciated.

From my very limited casing experience I have found that deep scratching shouldn't be nessisary unless your casing layer is too thin and you are begining to overlay. I would only incubate for 24 hours before giving them 12/12. I had the same idea as you at first, I thought casing should colonize, that is the wrong way though, the casing is there for mosture and protection, and it can't do that if it has been colonized. Dax I lie.

Exactly. Deep scratching isn?t something that is needed on a regular basis. Just leave the casings covered for a few days untill you see mycelium appear in the valleys of the casing layer, then put it into the terrarium. If you have Puero Ricans, then put the casing into terrarium immediately after casing.

Do take a little peek daily, though. I had some Orissa India that tore thru a casing and at 24 hours was already approaching overlay.

If you decide to scratch, be absolutely 100% sure that there is no contamination anywhere on the casing or you will lose the entire tray...

At the Temple, we don't deep scratch unless overlay is preventing fruiting. But this is the 'rule' for Cubies, we hav no exp with other strains.
