Crusty Cakes
    #5772568 - 06/20/06 01:51 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Sup yall, recently my colonizing brf cakes have been plagued by this spreading crusty yellow stuff on uncolonized portions of the cakes. the mycelium will not penetrate this stuff. i simply need to know what has happened to them and what have i done to cause this. my best bet is they dried out during sterilization although it could be a contam. what do yall think??

Since iv not got my PC yet, i use the steam boiling method. If your going to stick with this method, i suggest that you wrap a towel round the handle of the lid and put a very heavy object ontop of the lid. The towel creates a kind of platform for something to sit on top and what this does is increase the pressure to an extent inside your pot.

From what it sounds like, you birthed your cakes before they were fully colonized, leaving partial substrate exposing...

Apparently, uncolonized substrate in the FC is very vulnerable, so If you did birth them early, don't do it next time.

You can buy a pressure cooker for next to nothing. Check Ebay. Steam sterilizing gives mixed results. It's worth a few bucks in this hobby for a PC. Contams are tough to pin down, because they can happen at any step of the process. PC'ing can compensate for our lack of cleanliness sometimes. GL.

I picked up a PC for $40 on sale from $100 at Foleys... they have a $30 one at walmart that would fit a jar or two, which if you are doing small grows would be great. I didn't want to buy one either, but now that I have I have had 0 contams... very nice... definatly a MUST. Good luck!
