You could probably do a simple pH test to determine if it's boric acid or ammonium sulfate. The boric acid would obviously be acidic and the ammonium sulfate would be basic. It would also probably be handy to check when it's washed enough.
It sounds like a lot of work to produce substrate. Shredded cardboard would probably be cheaper and easier.

You can get pulp products like that at the pet stores too. It's used for animal bedding. The fungicides will effect spore germination, but not live mycelium. I've used them a few times for oysters with mediocre results. I've also used it in small amounts as a way to fluff up heavy composts or manure. It works ok, but not great. Let us know how yours turns out. RR

I see you are using a wood-lover species, so I suspect this substrate will be for spawning to an outdoor bed. I would like to see if you can fruit from this substrate however. Perhaps with a different species.
Do you know what the nitrogen percentage is? Anything over 14% and you could burn your mycelia. Good post. Keep us updated on the results.

Why can't people update threads they start? This looked to be a very interesting test. I'm about to start my own experiment with this stuff soaked in a very mild amount of coffee water. It will then be knocked up with LC. We'll see what happens. I may even update you guys with the results.

I didn't wash the insulation cellulose, and it failed completely. I used a B+ LC, that is working awesome on some birdseed jars. Anyways, absolutely nothing showed. Failed miserably.
