Cake is growing tentacles?
    #576973 - 03/12/02 02:10 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I birthed my first cake (Puertos on BRF/Vermiculite) about a week or 10 days-ish ago.  I've been using a foam cooler, pearlite in the bottom, with a small bubble stone in some water/h2o2 solution.  There's another hole near the bottom to drain the CO2.

Temperature is around 75-ish, natural indirect lighting from above.  Don't know the actual humidity, but there is a little condensation on the sides of the cooler.  None on the top window.

This cake appears to be growing myc. tentacles or something.  No pins yet.  Very fuzzy with these white growths.  Upon close examination, these growths are quite moist, as if they've collected moisture from the air and pooled it into droplets.  I do not mist the cakes directly -- only the sides of the cooler, not the top.

Too moist?  Not moist enough?

Since I heard Puertos were difficult to fruit, I did a cold-shock right when I birthed it.  Should I try it again or wait awhile longer?

Sorry no pics.  I can't afford a digicam yet.  :frown:

Don't worry, that is just the mycelium wanting to grow out, and find some more substrate to colonize. It always happens with me. The mycelium is hungy:). Be pateint, if your parameters are right, then they will grow.

One more thing; keep that humidity up!!! way up for cakes. You need tons of humidity.

Thanks, Glacius.  As long as the thing won't get up and come strangle me in my sleep, I won't worry too much.

I've been misting 1-3 times daily, plus the bubbler.  The mist on the sides and top doesn't appear to go away, so I may guestimate rh at 95-98%. (?)

...just anxious for pins

My cakes have not yet attacked me in my sleep (yet)

Second:
I've got lil' pins on the bottoms. YAY!

....maybe they grew tentacles 'cuz they just wanted a hug? Awww.

nope, they do that when the humidity is very high, like they're trying to suck water out of the air itself. very common.
