WBS vs. Rye vs. Popcorn

I've read numerous teks concerning each substrate/method. But I have failed to determine what makes certain substrates more appropriate than others. Is it strain dependant? Casings vs. cakes? etc.
Any input is appreciated.

grains (like all the above) are really easy to case because they literally fall apart and crumble really nicely, brf cakes stay together a lot better, so people usually use those their first time and just grow them out in cakes.
and choosing your grain isn't really strain dependent per se, it's more personal preference.
hope that helps

So why would someone want to use rye over popcorn? One simply being easier to buy than the other? One's cheaper? There has to be a reason.

personal preference, what they had laying around, etc...
i think most grains are prepared for substrate the same way anyways.
that's the only reason i can think of.
or maybe it's to confuse the dea into trying to ban all whole grains in the US.. who knows

Forget popcorn. It isn't suitable as a spawn material due to the large kernel size and it's tendency to contaminate easily. A jar of popcorn will have only 1/4 to 1/3 the amount of mycelium in it that the same size jar of rye or wbs will have. Remember, the mycelium colonizes the surface of the grains. Larger kernels mean fewer kernels per jar, thus less mycelium. The larger kernels also take longer to recover when damaged by spawning, leaving a larger window of opportunity for contaminant spores to land on them and begin growing before the mycelium recovers.
Rye, rye grass seed, millet and wbs are all viable spawn choices. The grain of choice for the commercial mushroom community is rye for a good reason. It works dependably and the uniform kernel size makes hydration even, unlike the different sized grains in wbs. RR

I like WBS. Reasons include: 1. Price ----> Cheaper than both PCorn and Rye (the biggest contributing factor, since I can easily go through a 50 lb. bag in a couple of weeks). 2. More inoculation points when spawning to bulk substrates than PCorn and Rye 3. More forgiving since there is differing grains balancing out the mixture.

Well here is my 2 cents
Pop-corn sucks plain out it holds little nutrients and contams rather easy
WBS is cool for hpoo because it gives you multiple points in whick your sub will colinise
Rye has tons of nutrients and can be fruited on it's own, apose to WBS. Rye also makes wonderful cases spawned or by itself.
Like it has been mentioned above, what is lying around and what is cheapest also plays a BIG factor

Rye seems to be the crowd pleaser amoung the ranks here. How does everyone buy their rye? How much cost/amount? What store? Just for comparision. Also, can anyone suggest a good rye grain tek?
