Harold Wellsted, 63, could also face charges of harassing wildlife, and assault for allegedly attacking two people who tried to warn him to stay away from the elk.
The incident happened Friday morning near the Visitor's Center in Estes Park.
A crowd gathered to watch a group of elk on the nearby municipal golf course.
"There were like 60 elk," said Estes Park resident Shirley Jackson. "There are lots of babies right now. They were just everywhere. People were stopped, watching."
Signs along the bike trail that borders the golf course warn people to stay away from the elk during calving season, but police say Wellsted ignored the signs and the warnings of onlookers.
"He continued to take his 6-year-old grandchild and push her to the elk to where she was six to eight feet from the elk," said Commander Wes Kufeld of the Estes Park Police Department.
"The elk got extremely agitated because it did have a calf - reared up in a very defensive manner. The child was screaming and trying to run. Mr. Wellsted grabbed the child and pushed her back in front of the elk to get a picture," said Kufeld.
Kufeld said Wellsted became angry when witnesses shouted at him to get the little girl away from the elk.
"Mr. Wellsted got upset, approached one couple, struck one lady with an open hand knocking her back and then struck an elderly gentleman - age 82 - knocking him off his walker," said Kufeld.
As Wellsted fled the scene witnesses took pictures of his car which police traced to his daughter's home in Greeley. Police arrested Wellsted Saturday morning, but police say he caused more trouble after he was taken into custody.
"Once in the booking room he assaulted our booking officer, so he's also being charged with second degree assault on a police officer," said Kufeld.
Police say Wellsted, of Calimesa, California, also had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on child abuse and assault charges in 2001.
***Only in Colorado.
I didn't know you could actually be charged with harassing wildlife. That's hilarious.

Isn't it sort of odd how the guy was walking around free with his kid since 2001 despite missing a court date for child abuse and assault?

Yeah, guess I should have said "a" kid.
Either way, that's still pretty damn whack.
