Infra-red search to check for grow lights would be my guess.
Definately time to close down shop and/or head to a new county/state.

He needs to get all the illegal shit out of there and vacuum too, clean everything as best as possible and do it real fuckin' quick before they possibly get their search warrant and come back.
Were there any grow lights hot during the time when the neighbor reported seeing the helicopter?

Yes they were. He's replaced his plants with flowers. Bad idea? It's all gone out of his house.

So this is definitely what he thought it was? What's the chances of his house being raided?

I would:
#1) get all of the plant material including roots, stems, seeds out.
#2) Get all of the quasi-legal things out like scales, grow guides, grow lights, pots, ferts, everything grow-related. Out to somewhere safe.
note: DO NOT throw any grow trash away to the curb!! Use toilet or take trash away to some anonymous dumpster.
#3) CLEAN EVERYTHING!! Vacuum, then empty bag in toilet. No stems/flakes/seeds in carpet!!
DO IT FAST!!!
Then:
OBSERVE your surroundings. Are you being followed? Make no sensitive phone calls from the house or cell phone anymore, use payphone if anything.

Since infra-red searches now require a warrant, the probability is high that they got an infra-red search warrant, and based on the findings, could be applying for a full search warrant.
That's why I'm emphasizing "time is of the essence" for proper clean-up.

And get the computer out too if he posts on grow boards, or has proud grower pics on it, or even if he doesn't it could still be used to investigate his bank accounts and search his emails. etc. etc.
note: Deleting pics, and clearing the cache/cookies/passwords isn't good enough, forensics will find it all. Get it out or buy a brand new hard drive and keep it spotlessly clean. (Format the old one and put it with the grow lights and other stuff)

orchids would be nice, people associate them with being hard to grow, leave the lights and some orchids, enough to make it look like you really are groing them, most people know orchids need special care and cant be grown out doors.
Do as Microcosmatrix said and move everyhthing else out of your house, the next thing you'll hear is the cops saying "we have a call about a noise complaint, someone said they heard a woman scream, can we talk to the lady of the house"
they'll claim they have to because of the nature of the complaint, it may be false but it'll be in court where thats straightened out

I would also retain a lawyer. When the police do show up, you will be a step ahead of them. Remember, do not consent to anything. If they ask you, it is because they need permission. If they didn't need permission, trust me, they wouldn't ask. To any and all questions, politely reply that you must speak with your lawyer before making any comment. If they ask to search your house, politely reply that you must speak with your lawyer before giving them permission. If they search anyway, don't try to stop them. Be polite and do not resist, yell, fight, get upset, or anything else. Don't give them anything to work with or use against you later. At this point it is all about damage control.
> If they didn't need permission, trust me, they wouldn't ask.
Heh... my first time quoting myself before I even get the post out. Sometimes the cops will ask for permission even when they don't need it. This helps them later if the probable cause used during the search gets tossed. If the person still allowed them to do the search, then the probable cause getting tossed doesn't matter. But usually, when a cop asks you for permission, it is because they don't have the right to do whatever they are asking about without your consent.

He thanks you guys for all of the help. The orchid thing is a great idea, he already has a few in his home growing. I know the light that he uses for his orchids can't get very hot, it's only a 125w light. If the heat sensor picked up the minimal amount of heat it was giving off, would it actually matter? He says a lot of the equipment he's bought has been with Ebay and he has paid with paypal everytime, which was a mistake. I know he's definitely playing it safe for a little while no matter what.

Keep us posted. I'm waiting for the raid.
It takes a lot of money to operate a helicopter. They didn't just do it for fun. Think "informant"

buying the legal equipment is not how your friend came to be scrutinized.
if it goes that far, the records of those sales may be used in court to show intent. that is all
but if your friends has some legit plants(orchids, veggies, whatever) going, then that entire aspect is pretty well useless in court.
shit like this can get messy.....but your friend is way ahead of the game at this point.
just hope they have no hard evidence of a sale or of the grow that was there.
if not...all good
don't ever grow at that locale again
edit in: wait a minute.....he only had one 125watter going?!
was it against an outside wall? or in the attic?
there is no way they even got a positive signature with only that little light
but still good that he cleaned up....as stated, they dont just do IR scans for shits and giggles. someone either tipped them or something far worse

There would only be you and your memories... the choices you've made, and the people you've touched. If this world were to end there would only be you and him and no-one else. " .............. "MAN! He was only using 125W? There's no way that would have tripped alarm bells at the electric company.
The ways that pot growers get busted:
1. High electric bills. 2. Someone telling on you by going to the cops. 3. Someone doing a controlled buy with you.
If they did #3...they wouldn't bother with infrareding the guy. It was probably #1 or #2. But, if the guy was only using a 125W light then it probably wasn't #1. It probably was #2. This means that the guy probably has a rat near him.
Once #2 happens, the cops will take your garbage. They don't need a warrant to do that and if they find ANYTHING they can get a warrant to search the residence. They can get a warrant to search even if they don't find anything and a police dog gets a "hit" (it smells something). So, don't handle a joint and then touch a piece of paper that you are going to throw away. You want ABSOLUTELY no drug residue on anything that is going to the curb.
If they infrareded your friend...that means they had a warrant to infrared. If they had a warrant to infrared...that means they had a damn good idea what he's up to.
Move fast.

Another possibility is that he was scrutinized due to poor security as it relates to his internet activities.
Did your friend post on Overgrow?
