    #5767877 - 06/19/06 12:32 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

alright so i am kinda new at this but have have been out hunting a few times with no results. then i came home from a weekend of camping and there are mushrooms growing in my backyard!

i did my best to document my findings.

here is the overall find:

none of them are all that big but there is alot

habitat: mostly shady grass

gills:dark brown

stem: white thin larger at base

cap: largest about 1/4th an inch light brown mostly domed

sporeprint: pending

brusing: darker brown

location: south central minnesota

i realize that there could be more than one species here but i just cant tell i will post as many pictures as possible but i know it will be hard.

im sorry for the lack of info

more pictures:

i can also try to answer any questions that you have

thanks!

Some of them look like Pans.
Probably Panaeolina foenisecii.
The spore print should help confirm this.
Pan foes have a dark brown spore print.
Other Panaeolus species have a black spore print.
You possibly have some other species in the mix, spore print them all and get back to us, that will help.

Looks dark brown, that suggests foenisecii.

You have to spore print all of them though, as you may have a mixed collection.

It's easy and can be done quick... just lay all of the caps out on a couple pieces of paper.

Hey guys, I found some shrooms today under my trampoline (of all places) that look extremely close to the ones shown here. I live in northern minnesota and have been looking for a long time and just today I find some. I would like to know what kind of shroom this is as well. Thanks!

Welcome to the shroomery. Please make your own ID request thread after reading the sticky threads, rules, etc at the TOP of the forum. You MUST read them first.

You are hijacking this thread by asking this here. That is not allowed.

They look like another brown mushroom to me. I wouldn't eat them.

Eris, I agree. That spore print is a classic P. foenisecii spore print.

Nope, not at all. If you're refering to the article that says P. foenisecii is active, thats an old article and their identification techniques were flawed. They actually had active Panaeolus mushrooms in that study. Subsequent studies have shown that actual P. foenisecii are not active at all.

If that article is hosted on this site, will you give me the URL? It needs to be deleted because all it does is cause headache for us in the hunting forum.

Panaeolus foenisecii is inactive, despite what the literature and rumour may have.  The confusion was over a chemical analysis that found small amounts of psilocybin in this common lawn mushroom, but it is not a legitimate study because it was later declared that the mushrooms thought to be Panaeolus foenisecii had been misidentified and was in fact the active and nearly indistinguishable Panaeolus subbalteatus.

You will know from a spore print.  I stole this from another member on the board- it is a wonderful guide picture!  I tried searching for the pic so I could remember who to give credit to, but I couldn't find them , so speak up if it's yours and thanks for the great photo!

I made that pic probably a year or two ago. I'm glad I made it, I've seen it used a ton

I also added a link to Gumby's guide to picking Panaeolus subbalteatus in the rules and guidelines thread.
That picture is included in the guide along with a lot of great info.
You should check it out of you have not seen it.

Is there any way that someone can give me the proper references for this article or URL as Id love to see it if I already havent (not the Allen article).....and if someones so motivated a SPECIFIC reference PROVING misidentification or skewed science .......or the references for the articles where this has been alledged ?

There you can choose any from the Allen article......there I wont be holding my breath......

And you also want to be sure that some of those pictured in the grass are not deadly Conocybes by printing all as suggested...

EDIT: YOU definately have several Panaeolina foenisecii in the pictures there....

Why does this always have to turn into a long debate, can't this foenisecii thing be put to rest already? It has been going on in this forum for years...
