Lids up, or down?
    #576720 - 03/12/02 09:55 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I'm just curious as to which way works the best. Using MMGG 1/2 pint jars, does it really make that much of a difference if the lids are on upside down, or rightside up?

If you put the lid rubber side down, it will actually 'seal' the jar, the way it is intended to for jams, etc. The rubber will melt a bit and you'll have to pry the lid to get it off.

Right, I know it will melt, but in my past experiences that is the way I have done it. I was just curious as to whether or not having the seal touch the glass was more or less effective.

When I first saw the title of this thread I thought it referred to the whole jar being right-side up or down.

My question is: if you should fruit a jar in the same orientation as it had when incubating, and if it is advised to flip the jars to drain CO2 midway through the incubation, and since the vermiculite top can be messy to scrape off anyway....

wouldn't it be a good idea to just incubate the jar upside-down the entire time? Then when you birth the cake, just pop it out onto the lid, and into the terrarium it goes. No messy scraping of vermiculte, etc. No unnecessary handling and blue-ing of the substrate.

Any reason not to do this?

The bottom line is: Controlled testing has shown that when the rubber is turned toward the glass, it takes longer to colonize. :peace:
