possible contamination, need help
    #5766722 - 06/19/06 03:06 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

im a newbie to growing mushrooms, so bear with me.

i have made twenty jars and inoculated them. i first began to notice growth 2 days after inoculation. it does not look like the mycelial growth in the pictures, though at the inoculation sites of some of the jars it does. the growth is more of a pearly white splotches spaced all over the outside of the cake rather than a billowing fluffy growth in the pictures. is this growth a contamination or is it mycelia?

Probably just early mycelium. If it finishes the jar in a week and doesn't look like strands or filaments, it's contam'ed (maybe cobweb). Mycelium will spread slower and look rhizomorphic (3-4 weeks for 100% colonization on average using a multispore syringe).

Two days is too soon to see visible mushroom mycelium from spores with the naked eye. I'd venture a guess to say you're seeing molds.
