Why boil water before pressure cooking
    #575936 - 03/11/02 02:25 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

Why is it recommended that boiling water be poured into the pressure cooker, instead of just boiling the water in the pressure cooker?

It is not needed. I suppose that what you were reading was a typo or just someone being twice as protective.

My pressure cooker also states that you pre-boil the water. However, I have been boiling the water in the P.C. Maybe the reasoning is to reduce a little time using the P.C. thus allowing a little longer shelf life (just a guess).

Boiling the water will not result in less PC time, it would probally result in longer PC time (from time you boil water, transfer to PC, then start PC)
The water has to boil before it reaches 15PSI anyhow.. so why bother doing it twice. the hot water you put into the pc might start boiling faster after you have the lid on.. but all you've done is heated it before putting it in.

pointless.

What kind of PC is that? I've used 3 brands of PC's over the years and none of them mention adding heated water first.

I think there's some confusion here.

Pre boil the water. . . doesn't mean to boil the water in a different vessel and then pour it into the PC. It means to boil the water in the PC first, before putting the contents in, and the cover on.

This way, the rocker starts almost immediately after capping the PC. Less time to stand around the PC waiting for the pressure to build up.

He probably read the grain preparation tek at myco-tek( http://www.myco-tek.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?s=3c8e37122785ffff;act=ST;f=10;t=9 ), where McMan suggest boiling water before putting it into the pressure cooker.

I asked him why once, and he replied that the directions of his pressure cooker told to do so.

yes, but it leads to more time overall.
If you boil it first in the pc pot, then put yer shit in and fire the lid on, you're really not saving any time. unless you are in a rush, and want to start boiling the water while yer making up the jars. yes, it will speed up the time from when you put the lid on. but dude, its gonna boil faster with the lid on and the shit inside to begine with. where do you think the heat energy is going when you are boiling with the top off? its going into your kitchen... as opposed to more going into building pressure (vapor) needed to reach desired pressure.

again,
pointless.
if you're running a second PC after a frst, it makes sense to use the same water that is already somewhat hot..
but still arent saving much time
