Millet Supplementation of Wood Chip Substrate
    #5760180 - 06/17/06 09:54 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I am planning to prepare some shiitake blocks, and recently I found this interesting information here:

http://www.mushworld.com/tech/view.asp?cline=8&cata_id=1120&vid=6487
(free registration necessary to access the article)

Quote:

ABSTRACT

Three experiments were performed to determine the effect of millet supplementation on mushroom yield and basidiome size of shiitake (Lentinula edodes) when grown on a synthetic substrate. Substrate formulations of sawdust, wheat bran, rye and CaCO3 were amended with white millet (17, 23, 29, and 34% [dry weight]). Addition of 34% millet to the substrate stimulated mushroom yield by 68% compared to a millet addition of only 17%. Biological efficiencies averaged (3 crops) 59.1%, 67.1%, 81.7% and 99.6% for millet additions of 17, 23, 29 and 34%, respectively. Thus, biological efficiencies increased an average of 13.5% for each additional 6% increase in the amount of millet supplementation. Alternatively, as millet levels increased, basidiome size decreased. Average basidiome size decreased from 23 g at 17% millet to 13 g per mushroom at 34% millet supplementation.

This also means, that one could simply inoculate the block with a big amount of millet spawn, and get the effect of thorough spawning and the benefits of a high millet content.

Now, I am aware that this is nothing really new or revolutionary, but I found it interesting nevertheless.

I like it. I wonder what would happen if you used 90% millet and 10% hardwood sawdust. Surely that would be enough wood to stimulate growth and the millet is allot more nutritious for it.

How economical is it to add 1.5 pounds of millet to each block though.

Its reasonable to grow a pound or two of mushrooms at 1.75 per block With that there is room for some overhead. But with the addition of extras such as millet and the like i find it would be rather costly. But i guess an extra 2 pounds yield per block could be well wurth it!

50 pounds of millet for 12 bucks not to shabby!
http://www.wheatandgrain.com/shop/Grains.html#millet
so thats wurth 50ish bags maybe 100. Thats an extra 100 pounds or so at least of mushroom.

hmmm sounds good!

what does it mean that basidome size decreased?

basidome = fruitbody

So, there were more but smaller mushrooms with more millet.

Smaller delicate mushrooms are often more sought after.

Yeah for soups and sauces wimpy delicate mushrooms are fine.

Myself I like a robust thick firm fleshed meaty mushroom like portabellas and king stropharia.

Big big thick shiitake are more marketable. Stamets even gives tips on how to grow fewer, but bigger mushrooms on the blocks in GGMM.

mm mm SRA steaks :drooling:

millet is a favorite of mine for most species when spawning for a few reasons
sounds good to me since I prefer millet anyway
