I need interior decorating help

I was going to buy stuff for my apartment at IKEA. I was going to get pictures for the walls, little knick-knacks, etc.. I need to fill my place out, but I have no clue what to get. I have no visual talent at all.
Seriously, can anybody help me?

I'll help, if you want.
Your place is sleek and modern. You should keep that trend with minimalist looking stuff, that also looks modern. Maybe some candle holders, picture frames, modern art on the walls, etc.
But you're right, you definitely need more stuff

That desk in the far left is being thrown out. I'm getting a new desk. So far, I am decided on a desk which will sit between those two windows (where the guitar is). I am going to put a cabinet where the old desk is. This cabinet will have a glass front and I will put my booze collection in it. I think the guitar amp will stay where it is. Above the fireplace will be a dartboard (I got the dartboard today). There is this big empty wall behind the couch. I need to get pictures/paintings for it.

I'm thinking of getting a rug for under the table/front of the TV area. Also, there is an alcove behind that shelf. I'm thinking of getting a pinball machine for that area.

The more I think of it...the more I think I need someone to personally look at my place, go with me to IKEA, and point shit out that I should buy. Just looking at some grainy pics over the internet isn't going to help much I don't think. I seriously am willing to pay for someone to come and help me. I am hopelessly lost on this stuff. Guys can't make stuff look good like girls can.

No offense Randal....
but it's your place. Put whatever the fuck you want in it. Who are you doing this for? Yourself? I get the feeling its for some non-existant woman who's only going to enter your life if your apartment is all Ikea'd out.
What the hell man? Get some balls.

That's the problem. I have never had an iota of artistic ability. I can't even draw a stick figure. I cannot visualize what looks good. I can recognize it however.

That's my place. It's me. I don't give a fuck if it looks nice or not. I think it does. All that shit is shit I bought. I don't give a fuck if it matches or doesn't. I don't give a shit if it's not totally clean. My place is usually messy, but it's never dirty.
Everyone who has seen it loves and thinks it's totally me...which is what I go for.
You hire someone else to pick shit out for you....you gonna like that? In the long run?
Maybe we just think differently.

I think you could use a mirror somewhere on a wall. Also an artwork of somekind, maybe stylized abstract or sketch drawing. Maybe a small rug or straw mat on the floor in front of the TV. Some nice glasswork or carved objects on the big plank above the TV. Some lights on stands so you don't have only ceiling light. Gives you more lightning options and gives ambience to a room. I'd go with curtains for your windows. Black or maybe very dark red. A square candle arrangement next to the TV for the ladies and cosyness.

Your place looks cool as hell. I wish I could come up with stuff like that but I can't.
I want a "cozier" look to my place. Right now it's expansive and barren. I swear...there's an echo in here. I'm afraid that I'm going to buy a bunch of shit and it will look horrible though. That's why I really need help.

Weird...I actually thought of every single one of those suggestions. Thanks for validating my guesses and opinions. Maybe I don't suck as much as I thought at this stuff.

Well, my overhead lights do dim...so I can give the room a little more "ambience". But, I see what you're saying. I just don't want the stand-alone lights to get in the way or to look awkward in the room.

Interesting. I was thinking of just having those shades...but curtains might look good.

Admittedly, IKEA furniture is not of the highest quality. But, I'm just a young guy living in an apartment with no kids. I don't own my own house. I basically just need shit which will fill my place and look decent. If I ever buy a house I will buy my "permanent" furniture.
Also, I have a buddy at IKEA that gets me %15 off everything.

All my plants require very little light, as I have the blinds closed most of the time. The one by the couch is a Dwarf Palm or Neanthe Bella. I've got 5 of them. One of them which isn't picture is over 3 years old.
And I'm working on a huge poster of Bill Hicks to put over the couch.

good furniture is hard to come by, the stuff you buy at IKEA is disposable, but definately not worth the small price you pay, you'll spend more on good quality but it's furniture that will last through children and for several generations as opposed to particle board you find in most furniture stores, over all your place looks fine, like you mentioned you need wall hangings and decor items
if you have to replace a table or decide to get something new, let me know, I can help steer you to well built stuff that will hold up to life.

most of what you need can be found there, just avoid their furniture, also avoid any place that is 'scandinavian' furniture, the styles can be found elsewhere but built to last (that means resale value when you get sick of it)

Next to the TV might be a bit weird yeah, but I couldn't see many other surfaces in your room. Maybe on your table but that looks a bit cluttered. A few plants is a nice idea. It's hard to come up with more ideas because that would kind of ruin you minimalist style which I quite like in your case.
My room is really personalised
I am going to put in a wooden floor somewhere in the next couple of weeks. And I need another plant besides my bonsai.

There used to be a big gas heater in front of it, there's only a hole for the exhaust in it atm. The gas heater could go when central heating was installed. I might break it open though. A fireplace would be nice. Here is my room with the lighting effects for tripping

You are one for small details. I'd like to get a door handle like this:

On the other side of the door I'd like a knocker like this

These things are pretty expensive though.

The room looks cold, stark. Introduce some warm colors to soften it.
I agree with Prisoner. Get a couple of high-quality pieces that you love and that will last. The better places will let you take stuff home to see how it looks in your home. (Especially important for rugs)
Another thing you can do is flip through magazines & tear out pictures of rooms that look appealing to you. Collect these, then see what common themes emerge. Take some of these with you when you go out looking for stuff. And don't feel like you have to buy everything at once!
Some will tell you that everything has to be the same style or period. Bullshit! If things look good together, go for it.
Good luck to you.

thats the key, it's good to have different styles periods together as long as none stand out badly, empire and deco do quite well together and you can occasionaly find asian influenced pieces that blend beautifuly

Thanks man, I always put a lot of work in my room and it usually keeps on evolving as long as I live there. I thought you liked the minimalist style, I think it can really work. But if you really want to make it cozy then there are a lot of other options.

Dude! That's what I want. I want it to be kind of advanced/minimalist...but I want it to be cozy and fun too.

Not that everything has to relate to shroomies, but here goes...
One of the best experiences I had was with a trip buddy whose living room was totally cozy and felt warm, like it was wrapping itself around me. This was true the next day when I was stone-cold straight up.
She had overstuffed couches with nice woven fabric. Her coffee table had a soft padded area where you could put your feet. She had soft (chenille?) throws over the backs of the couches. Iron table lamps with amber/brown shades; cast a nice glow in the evening. Pillows. Natural wood. Stuff like that. It was awesome.

I think so, but then you'd really have to work with colors and lights. Earthy, terracotta and red colors.
Ahhh... yes! Autumn colors -- think of how cool trees look when they are changing colors & starting to drop their leaves.

That's what I try to model my place after....how would I react to it if I was tripping balls? Would I be comfortable or would I not be? Anything that would make me uncomfortable I no longer own.

curtains and a rug would help with the echo factor, as well as giving the room some personality. other than that I think some tapestries would help..
