Casing Question

Hi,
Just a quick question about the casing layer. If someone was doing h poo and cased with verm+coir... is it necessary that the casing be sterilized? If so, can you suggest the most efficient way to sterilize it?
If a flush is pulled and the casing gets dunked to replenish h20, do you reapply another casing layer?
Break do what you and your friends do for casing layers.
Thanks,
Shaman

You don't need to dunk casings, constantly keep moist with spraying.
And I think your supposed to pasteurize that casing mix.

Some people insist that casing needs to be pasteurized. Which means, I think, getting it to about 160F for an hour. Though you'll hear all sorts of arguments over temps and duration.
I just pasteurized my casing layer by mixing it up, putting it into jars and topping it off with water so the entire mix was submerged. I then placed these jars in a large pot with a wire rack on the bottom so the jars weren't touching direct heat. Filled the pot with water so the water level inside the pot was about the same as the water level inside the jars (about 1/2" from the top). A thermometer in the jars let me know when the core temp of the mix got to 160F and I kept it there for an hour then removed the jars.
Remember, the glass is an insulator so it'll take much longer for the center of the casing mix to hit 160F than the water outside the jars so place the thermometer inside the jar. =)
Strained the mix and spread out into a sterilized (alcohol spray) container to cool for a wee bit. Once the mix got below 90F I applied a layer just thick enough to cover the myc. I'd say it was about 1/3".
Most people will say a microwave tek will suffice. Others say this kills off the good stuff, too, leaving you open to contams. I don't know which is true, I just decided it was worth the extra effort and so I took the advice of a growing veteran.
If you're interested in using this method and anything is unclear, just ask and I'll try to clarify.
