Japan and US warn N Korea on test
Japan and the US have issued new warnings to North Korea not to proceed with a possible test firing of a new long-range missile. Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Aso and US envoy Thomas Schieffer met in Tokyo amid increasing speculation that Pyongyang is set to conduct a launch.
Officials believe that Pyongyang may be planning to test the Taepodong-2, a missile with a range of up to 6,000km.
Mr Schieffer urged North Korea not to take "provocative action".
Such a move would lead to further isolation from the international community, he said.
Mr Aso described the situation as serious and said that Japan had warned North Korea against going ahead with a test.
The message was sent via diplomatic channels in Beijing, according to Japanese media reports.
Site activity
The meeting followed reports in the regional media that North Korea was stepping up its work towards a test.
South Korean daily Chosun Ilbo reported that booster rockets had been loaded onto a launch pad and 10 fuel tanks moved to the site in the north-east of the country in preparation for a launch.
The information came from US and South Korean satellite images of activity at the site, the daily said, citing an unnamed government official.
A Japanese daily, the Sankei Shimbun, reported that the missile could be fired as early as Sunday, citing unnamed government officials.
Japan is acutely worried by this, says the BBC's Chris Hogg in Tokyo. The government says any launch would threaten the country's security.
North Korea last tested a long-range missile in 1998, when it fired the Taepodong-1 missile, with a range of 2,000 km, over northern Japan. The missile landed in the Pacific Ocean.
Diplomats say that North Korean technicians are going through the same procedures that were undertaken before the test in 1998.
A successful test of the Taepodong-2 would put parts of the US within striking distance of Pyongyang.

Where's all the chickenhawks on this one? Shit like this just works to further prove we are really in the middle east because of what's under the ground. It's obvious NKorea is more of a threat with WMD than any country in the middle east, yet you don't see our govt doing shit about them but flapping their jaws.

North Korea missile fueled for launch: report
Monday Jun 19 11:56 AEST
North Korea has finished fueling a long-range missile, moving a key step closer to a test launch, the New York Times reports.
US officials concluded that North Korea had completed the fueling of the Taepodong 2 missile believed capable of reaching the United States after examining satellite images, the Times wrote on its website.
"Fueling a missile is generally considered an irreversible step" toward launch, the Times said.
The paper said US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged Beijing over the weekend to press Pyongyang to cancel plans to fire the intercontinental ballistic missile.
It also reported that State Department officials had telephoned North Korean delegates at the United Nations in New York to warn against a launch. The direct contact was unusual but one unnamed senior administration official told the paper that "we needed to make sure there was no misunderstanding".
Reports of the imminent test have drawn warnings from the United States, Japan and South Korea, who are concerned that North Korea is pushing forward with its nuclear weapons program amid talks to convince it to give up the weapons.
Japanese officials were quoted overnight as saying that a test was unlikely.

It is not irreversible, but is seldom done. The fuel tanks can only be filled a few times before they loose structural integrity and must be replaced. The fueling (and draining) process are also very dangerous.

i can think of a number of adversaries which were not "weak and defenseless" that the US has fought. some of them were more capable than north korea is now.

My point was that you'd have to back quite a bit before 1993 to find a war where we took on an adversary that wasn't a walk in the park(excluding the current Iraq occupation).

Grenada was scary, actually. It wasn't as bad as, say, Panama, but when we send in a few rifle platoons of Rangers, or a few swim teams of SEALS, it's always a victory

NK has thousands of artillery pieces and rockets zeroed in on Seoul. It's simply not possible to use force against NK without immediately losing Seoul and the million of people inhabiting it.
Damned poor place to build the capital.
