Not the best of experiments but it sound fun
All I basically did was use a certain amount of coffee to a certain amount of water, strained it through a coffee filter. Made two jars, one with coffee filtered twice and one filtered 4 times.
I know nothing is specific, but that's because I wanted to see if anyone was intersted at all, lol.
I myself don't really care for coffee, I was there for the coffee Experiemnt and tried that myself and noticed nothing, so I thought this would be intersting. Haven't really seen a test like it.
Hit me up with some feedback and i'll post back with more specifics, and in a week or two, results

Just make sure it's properly sterilized and filtered and it will work fine. Is it clear enough to see what's going on? RR

I was thinking of this when i read a post by CreamCorn today about how coffee helps. Its a cool thing, and its awesome that out community is working on all aspects of it.
I'm very interested in seeing just what happens.. Pls keep us updated. (You got a cam right?) Thanks

I didn't name all the specifics because and because I wasn't up for typing a bunch if no one was intersted.
I added like half a teaspoon per jar.

Remember that caffeine is a carcinogen (at least to fungi)... See if you get any interesting mutants.

yeah, i've never heard of caffeine being a carcinogen to ANYthing. i know it acts as a steroid, but i've been using coffee in my substrates and i don't recall any sort of crazy mutations

Mushrooms get cancer? That's a new one to me. However, since cancer is defined a faster rate of cell division than old cells are dying, I suppose if this WERE true, it would be a good thing. RR

Ha! LOL. Shame on me, I meant mutagen. I was reading a bit on fungal genetics and it was discussing different types of mutations and causes. Base substitution is a type of DNA error caused by chemicals similar to ATG or C being incorporated into DNA rather than the normal base. Caffeine is a base analogue of adenine. It is a mutagen to many organisms. Despite being a base analog it surprisingly hasn't been found to cause cancer in humans. It would probably fail an Ames test and never be approved for human use if it were introduced today.
Here is a link if you're interested. http://www.cbs.dtu.dk/staff/dave/roanoke/bio101ch10c.htm
Good catch on the terminology there RR. Makes me feel pretty foolish. I imagine that fungi might get cancer sometimes though, but they probably don't have a long enough lifespan for it to happen very frequently. It also probably isn't much of a problem for them either since a tumor would just sit around while the myc would be long gone in search of new substrate.

I've been sold on the value of coffee grounds as growth substrate. I threw a coffee filter full of grounds into a jar after dumping the contents. There was a thin film of mycelium left in the bottom of the jar. The growth on the coffee grounds was fast and rhyzomorphic. The grounds contain plenty of nutrition. Not sure about plain coffee water, but give it a go.
Was thinking that coffee grounds would be a good nutrition booster for straw.

I waent crazy with the coffee on my last WBS prep. It was soaking in about 80% strong coffee and a bunch of used grinds. I had to balance the acidity with hydrated lime. I boiled it a little after the soak and rinsed very well. Colonization seems to be a little faster than it was without the coffee, but the jars were drier this time too, so maybe the water content was better. Anyway, it didn't hurt.
