Cleaning the Casing

So what do you guys do to remove the whole entire casing, lets say that its got itty bitty pins galore. Its very tedious to do this one by one. Do you just scrape them right off with like a spatuala or something?
Is there a less tedious way?

A less tedious way to ruin your project? I fail to understand why you would want to scrape all the pins off your casing layer. What's up with that? RR

i think this is another one of those issues where advice was given in the past, but over time its been misconstrued. it seems lots are under the impression that there is 'no mushroom left behind' when its time to harvest. which is true to an extent, you should pick all that are big enough to be picked. people naturally thinks this means 'pick all that are big enough to see'. which is of course improper, since you'll be destroying the primordia that will be the second and third flushes.

eh, lesson learned. Yeah, i was gonna dunk thats why. But i guess i just learned my lesson, the casing layer is destroyed from all the big mushies... i literally pulled chunks and hunks out.
I didn't recase or fill it in either...
I am having already a hell of a time cleaning the damn peat and verm off. I gotta cut a lot of mushies right now.

Oh, I see. Just dunk the substrate, pins and all. The pins for second and third flush usually form at the time pins for first flush are forming. If you pick them, you ruin your next flush. Simply cut off the mushroom at the base with a sharp knife. RR

ah, when you get those big clusters i found a little trick to help get them up at once with minimal damge.
Every cluster has an edge to it, find the edge of the cluster you want to remove and begin by lifting it up bit by bit until you've worked around the whole cluster. Once you've got this edge lifted up you can start working the cluster back and forth slowly, eventually it will free itself from the substrate layer. You'll still tear off a bit of the substrate, but it wont leave those 2 inch divots you can sometimes get.
Remember it's better to work slowly and carefully. even when you twist and pull it's best to be as gentle as possible and take your time. The PE i harvested today grew in some mega clusters yet my substrate remains mostly intact because i took some extra time in working them free bit by bit.
Oh ya, FYI, if you have musrhooms that are prohibiting direct access to the clusters remove them first to give yourself a little breathing room. I usually don't even begin to harvest clusters until all the solitary musrhooms ahve been picked.
my .02 anyways

yeah i hear ya. This time i had a unique problem. The whole flush was basically a huge cluster.
I dunno what happeend. Some crazy stuff i might add. its currently dunking, i'll let it soak for an hour or two and drain it, and then fix her up.
The sub block has shrunk A lot.

I had a similar problem with my PE casing, i had one huge megacluster, a few small clusters, and a handful of individuals. Just take your time man, eventually you'll find a method that works the best for you.
