horsepoo starting to stink

i'm working on a bulk grow, horsepoo and straw, with 4 pints of wbs. its been in the incubator for about a week now, and although its slowly colonizing, it's starting to smell a bit funky- not like ammonia, but like compost and horse manure.. if it colonizes, will it still fruit? should i throw some more spawn on top to hurry it along?
thanks

Are you sure this manure wasn't too fresh when you started?

possibly- i leeched it pretty well on my rooftop for a couple weeks; also, a second bulk grow from the same manure has successfully colonized. the poo was pretty fresh when i gathered it, straight from the local po-po!
i did two bulk spawns at once, then realized that i couldn't fit both in my incubator. the stinky one had to sit out at room temp for a few days before going into the incubator. this may have been the source of my current woes.

I'm not really sure what the problem is, but I think it should have colonized by now. My bulk grow I'm working on now (my first grow ever) the dookie colonized in about 5 days with about 4 pints of WBS. Mixed it into a box about 2 feet by 1.5 feet, 3 inches deep. What ratio WBS to dookie did you use, and can you see any noticeable contaminates? Dragon

1.5 feet by 3 feet, 4 inches deep, 4 quarts of wbs spawn, half poo and half straw, packed down nice and tight.
there are tiny little dark spots on the top, which i assumed to be gathered moisture. i'll go take a picture and post.

Sounds like it was leeched ok. Yeah, I would have to guess that it's probably contaminated. Keep it seperate if possible and keep an eye on it. Sorry.

I thought it was dangerous to have straw exposed when doing a bulk grow? Thought it was recommended to put a layer of dookie down on top of it, although I'm not sure, I'm still a noob. Dragon

Wait, you're incubating Hpoo? You're not supposed to incubate Hpoo; it gives off its own heat as it colonizes.

ahh, well, i guess i'll take it out then! if it gets really stinky i'll bury the whole thing in a nearby field or something.
who knows, maybe the myc will pull through and kill that shitty funk..
thanks again.

Wot if you live in a place with very cold temperatures? Should you just incubate it at a lower temperature than usual?

If it's that cold in your house, then possibly. It depends upon how deep your substrate is, since the deeper it is, the more heat it will generate. If it gets too hot, then it will start to ferment and give off an odor.
As long as your house is at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and your using poo that's at least 2 inches deep, you should be fine without incubating.
I recommend using 3 inches of poo, any more than that isn't worth it IMO (that would be a waste of good poo that could go into another grow), but if you insist on using more, then don't go over 4.5 to 5 inches deep.
But yes, as a general rule, you don't want to incubate the poo.
