Ok . .i have tried once and failed with all 12 jars . . . .little green monster!!!
I think it had alot to do with my sterility!
Heres my plan!
Day one- I am goin to buy organin brown rice and use a coffe grinder at the store to grind it. Then I will prepare 12 jars maybe more of brf and verm. From there i will cap like normal (tighten lids and put tape over holes and cover with aluminum) then i will have a low boil for about an hour! Then let everything kool.
Day two- I am goin to take my sterilezed and place them in a room . .spray some of my 50/50 bleach n water in the room followed by some lysol.
I can get syringes in any store around me . . i wanna order them but should my mom open my mail for the first time it would look really odd! I am goin to have to stick with prints.
I will take a needle (sewing needle) Sterilize it with alcohol and then flame it. Scrape of some of my print and close the cap . .and then put my filter over it!
Then i will place in a rubbermaid container on top of a heating pad!
How does this sound?

well i ground my br before and 2morrow i will prepare my substrate. . . .
i will like i said boil for one hour!!!
How much water and verm and br should i use (im doing 12 jars) . .how many cups of each considering im boiling and can i put honey in the water?
I will let my substrate sit for a day and if i see no contams i will proceed to innoculate my jars! Im going to use a sewing needle to scrape the print off!
I hope this works!!!!!!!!!

According to MMGG, the recipe is 2/3 c. vermiculite, 1/4 c. brf, 1/4 c. water. If you grind your own flour, which we did, add 1&1/2 tablespoons water. To further protect from contams, spread verm & brf on cookie sheets and bake for 20 mins. at 300 F. We did this and have had success so far (Just started birthing cakes 2 days ago). Also, why not start slow and learn? We ordered two syringes, but only inoculated six jars. That way if we f up, we have more to try again. Unless you have unlimited resources of course.shrewman1

LilDon,
You don't want to tighten the lids BEFORE sterilizing.
According to the PF tek you leave 'em loose while sterilizing
so the steam permeates the substrate, then tighten AFTER
they cool down you tighten. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's what
I did. I'm a newbie too.

You dont need to tighten the lids after. Its okay to leave them loose.

From the PF Tek, Chapter 1:"After the jars have cooled,
tighten the lids and store them in a cool draft free place until
ready to inoculate them"( www.fanaticus.com )

If you can get a pressure cooker that will greatly help with sterility. If you have to boil, do it at higher temps with a tight fitting lid. If you can use a syringe do so, its much easier, then you can just innoculate through the holes in the lids. And to be even more sterile, bring your oven up to about 225 - 250deg, open the door and innoculate on the oven door, the hot air pouring out should be nice and clean and keep your innoculations clean. Also you can wipe your needle between jars with rubbing alcohol. As for the lid tightness, I'd say leave them loose during sterilization with tape over the holes, tighten as soon as you take them out of the water, innoculate by pulling back the tape and replacing and then loosen the lids as the jars start to grow.
Hope this helps

i read on one of the beginner teks to leave the jars tight but leave the tape off of the nail holes. it said that steam getting into the jars would screw up the water ratio. why would you bother to use foil to cover the lids if you wanted water\steam to get into your jars? could somebody please clarify this for me? a friend of mine did some jars with the lids tight and the tape holes uncovered, only with foil crumpled over the top. thanks in advance.

From PF Tek, Chapter 1 :"When steaming or pressure canning is performed, the jars must be protected from water dripping down from the underside of the pot lid caused by heavy condensation and drip off during boiling. This water can get into the jars by entering under the jar lids that aren?t tight and soaking the substrate - throwing off the formula and setting up failure. To prevent this, wrap some tin foil around the cap to ward off the water. The tin foil can be removed after steaming (with the tape guarding the needle holes - or the tin foil can be left on until it is inoculation time." ( www.fanaticus.com/sub-prep.htm )

also for my incubator i have a rubbermaid container . .i put a heating pad on the bottom and a towel over it . . . .i plan to just put the filters on my jars and then place them in it . . . will that be alright?

Dude, unless I'm reading this wrong, you've already steralized it, and haven't put the filters on yet?
I hope, for your sake, that's not the case.

oh and they are siting in my incubator right now which isnt very fancy . . .just a rubbermaid container with (green) with a heating pad on the bottom and small towel over the heating pad on which my jars are resting. The lid is on also . .how much is good tho? Should i have the heaitng pad on high medium or low? . . . it isnt a very strong heating pad and the towel absorbs alot of the heat too!
