more newb questions :)
    #5758094 - 06/16/06 05:07 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Hi all,

I'm new to growing and thought I'd pool from the more experienced out there. So far I'm doing good, built an incubation chamber, a fruiting chamber, and i've got myc growing.

1.) I have lots of old glass peanut butter jars. They have single lids, unlike mason jars. Can these be filled with grain and PC'd? Will they withstand the pressure, and will the single piece lid be a problem?

2.) I live on a farm and have access to plenty of cow and horse poo. Can I make PF style cakes with poo/straw? And are there any good teks on this?

3.) I've been using popcorn so far in my qt jars. When I first read of this on the shroomery I read of super fast colonization times of 5-9 days. I'm not getting that, and I'm using tyvek filters and an incubation chamber. So far i'm see'ing it's taking atleast 5-7 days just to see white spots, and then a couple weeks for full colonization. Is this slow speeds for popcorn?

... hmmm...I had more questions but I can't think of them now lol

Thanks for the help, and as always happy shroomin

I've heard many say that popcorn takes awhile to start up and then it finishes fast.

Why don't you give some Wild Bird Seed a try?

Go to your farm store and ask for 'economy wild bird feed'.

They'll give you a 50 lbs. bag for like 10-15 bucks.

If you start with Liquid cultures you wont have to wait for your spores to germinate and you will speed up your grows.

Glass peanut butter jars and single piece lids should work...I assume they are plastic? I prefer using the single piece plastic lids myself. If your worried about the seal a piece of micropore tape around the outside may help.

You could make PF style jars using horse poo. Sorry I don't have a link for ya off the top of my head. It will work if you make a mixture of poo, vermiculite and some grain instead of just brown rice and verm. I still think it would be best if you just pasturized the horse poo and spawned some colonized grain too it. Creating grain spawn has a lot of advantages like being able to shake the jars to spread the mycelium. And being able to do grain to grain transfers to greatly increase your spawn. It's also easy to pasteurize larger quantities of poo.

1) yes if you have a hole in the lid, stuff or cover it w/ tyvek/filter disks/ or polifill

2) http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=panaeolus&Number=591745&fpart=&PHPSESSID=
this is a tek for pans, but should also work well for cubes

3) yes it is a little slow.. did you hydrate correctly, might be a problem with moisture.

add some spent coffee grounds to the corn, or hydrate it with very weak coffee and it will speed up some

Thanks for all the replies. I will have to try the coffee thing. I don't think moisture is a problem. I soaked for 24 hours, simmered for 1 hour, and strained for 30+ minutes before loading them in the PC. I did a G2G transfer of one jar that was doing exceptionally well to two other jars before casing. Those two jars are now coming on quite slowly, and the casing didn't really have enough grain after the transfers so it's taking a while to colonize the now extra thick casing layer. Is it normal to see slowed growth when doing G2G? Also another thing about those jars is that when I added the colonized grain to the 2/3 full jars, the jars are now about 4/5 full. Could that be why they are colonizing slowly?

I've thought about working with wild bird seed. It's certainly cheaper than buying organic popcorn. The thing I DO like about popcorn is that it's been easy to work with, and consistent. I tried barley and that didn't work at all. Popcorn is a stiffer grain and holds it's shape under cooking, but I will try birdseed too and do a comparison

Well, anyways I just knocked up 4 more qt jars, and 10 cakes. As an experiment I used about 3cc's on 1 cake to see if I get super fast colonization or just wasted 2cc's lol. Wish me luck

Oh yeah, I remembered my other question. The tyvek i used is Tyvek Home Wrap. You've probably seen new houses wrapped in this to protect the plywood from the elements until they get siding. When people speak of tyvek is this the same stuff they are talking about?
