Disclaimers.
1. Im not a bored teenager looking for cheap and legal highs. 2. In no way am i claiming patchouli to be any sort of hallucinogen, psychedelic or even anything active this side of sleeping. 3. my expirements are hardly very scientific and might even be a little bit dangerous. as always common sence is advised.
My mother is an eccentric lady who has a penchant for expensive perfume. One evening she described how she went to bed wearing a heavy dousing of a new perfume she had just acquired, she described how both her and her partner woke up the next morning complaining of vivid and bizare dreams. A few months later after doing a bit of research she somehow came to the conclusion that this was due to there being a lot of patchouli in her ner perfume and that this had been used in the past as a narcotic.
As I am interested in dreams and have often wish thier were ways i could alter and enhance them, as well as attempt to make them clearer and more easily retrievable from memomory i thought id carry out an investigation. ( )
Excercise One: a few nights later i borrowed a bottle of patchouli essential oil from my sister in law (note: this of course could have anything in it and maybe very little or even no patchouli) and also a oil burner. This burner looks like an oblong about 8 inches high with a cavity at the bottom where a small candle is put quite a way underneath a small cermaic bowl which holds the oil and water mixture , thus slowly releasing the vapors. After sniffing a lot of rush during my youth i am slightly skeptical of anything trying to pass its self off as "liquid incence" so for old times sakes unscrewed the top of the bottle, blocked one nostril and took a few deep sniffs. unsurprisingly this gave me a slight headache, irritated eyes and a dull heavy feeling in my head. the purpose of that was to get a large dose of the scent into my head before going to sleep, i assumed this would be just the same as slowly smelling the same amount over a longer period of time (like i said before im not the worlds most scientifically minded person). that done i set up the burner beside my bed as per a normal person and went to sleep, rather nauseauted at the smell of patchouli that was pervading my nose, room, skin and bed.
That night i did have strange, vivid and clear dreams which i were able to remember with high accurasy the next day. some elements of the dream were also quite trippy. However, the overall content of the dreams were not particualrly interesting/insightful, just odd. One point i did note was that the main character in the dream apart from me was a man whom i used to live with, who i had seen a few days earlier after not seeing him for a year or so. we're not exactly friends or enemies i just remember being really surprised to see him. but normal dreams have a habbit of doing that anyway, it was just odd cause he was there for the whole dream.
in the morning i woke up with a slightly headache, dull head and stinking of damn patchouli. like i said though, i did have clear recollection of the dream.
Excercise Two:
a few months later i repeated the experiment but this time tried to find a way that would maximize intake while reducing the length of time/exposure i had to have to the raw product. once again i assumed this had something to do with my nose .
i took one sniff of the bottle as per earlier but then decided id try something different and dabbed one small drop of the oil onto a peice of tin foil and then held a lighter underneath this and inhaled the vapor. inspired by a similar thing we used to do with cannabis oil, however i wasnt prepared to inhale the patchouli into my lungs of course so took the nasal route.
i then went to bed with the previously experienced slightly heavy head and dull headache. this was at 10 pm. at 12am i was awoken by someone returning home, i noted i had a very dull and heavy head and a headache but at this point had experienced no dreams. i resumed sleep and did have dreams (note: several seperate dreams as opposed to one long one as in the first experiment). the first dream involved meeting and ahaving a conversation with my ex girlfriend who i havent seen or had any contact with in the past few years (whom i had not been thinking of at all recently). another dream was being berated by a friend about some issues in my life recently (which had taken up most of my waking thoughts), what she said made me very uncomfortable. there were a few more dreams but i cant remember them.
as opposed to the first experiment the second was not as vivid, as continual and i didnt have much recollection the next day. In alot of ways this was pretty similar to normal dreaming then .
The only similarites between the two experiences was a theme of interaction with people from my past (the friend in the first then my ex in the second). These arent people I'd usually dream about and certainly not have the conversations we did during the dreams. this is one aspect of "patchouli expereience" which does intrigue me. the other is the clarity and ease of recall i experience on my first try (which im guessing was more succesful due to havign a continual source of the crap burning beside my bed or inhaling more directly from the bottle).
Conclussion: had a few interesting bits, but that could just be placebo/coincidence. if there was a way to get the two positive effects i mentioned easier then it may be something id study further. But the whole discomfort and hassle factor of the experience doesn't really make it worthwhile i feel.
if anyone has done similar expirements with patchouli or has any suggestions id be interested to hear your thoughts.
sorry for the long (probably very boring post).
and like i said earlier, this stuff won't get you high so don't get excited.

Just a little side note, ever since i started burning inscence i have had very little if any dreaming at night. They probably burn for about 3 hours after i fall asleep (i make big long ones, >3 ft) and ever since then, i havent had barely any dreams. also on the few nights ive slept downstairs or fell asleep in the bathroom or class or car or outside walking around i have dreams, even though i am only asleep then for around 10 seconds?
i dunno, just a side note
