How long does it take for rubbing alcohol to evaporate? For example, if I take a RA bottle and dab some on a cotton swab, how long will that cotton swab be good to wipe down a needle?
I have had some inoculation problems, even under most sterile conditions and I am trying to pinpoint the problem

It depends on the concentration. 90% is faster than 70%, which is why 70% is often preferred. IME, a wiped surface of 90% evaporates in about 30 seconds. But, I live in the desert with humidity at 15% on average.
Have you tried LC? I had total success my first try and it makes plenty of mycelium for inoculating jars far more successfully. Also, you might want to consider taping a tarp from floor to ceiling to make a little makeshift clean-room. Then just spray sterilize the inside with bleach and Oust before you begin.

I don't recommend using alcohol on a syringe needle. You should use a flame to heat it red hot. Use the syringe while the needle is still red hot. The first few drops of solution will sizzle and cool down the needle, allowing the rest of the solution to flow uncontaminated.
Remember, an alcohol swab only wipes down the outside of the needle. Your solution travels through the inside where the alcohol hasn't reached. Even if you dip the needle in a shotglass of alcohol, it won't penetrate to the inside. It's like putting your thumb over a drinking straw and sticking it in a glass of water. No water enters the straw unless you release your thumb. Use a flame. RR

ok thanx for the feedback!
RR I remember reading your point in a prior post months back. To offset the cotams that may be present in the needle, I usually squirt out approx .1 ml of syringe to shoot out any contams that may be present in the needle, I do this only the first time and use the entire needle without saving any spores...
My problem maybe that I wipe that top of my jars with wet rubbing alcohol cotton and the filter disc gets wet.... cuz after innoculating i shake the jar to distribute moisture/spores... the contam can occur when the disc gets wet (which the alcohol on the cotton probably alreadly evaporated) and mind you that all my work is done under a FH
I guess a good next question would be "gloves or no gloves during inoculation" so one could feel how wet a cotton swab is?
I need to figure when the contam entered my grain jars
