what is the advantages of the more simpler substrates. like WBS, BRF, Rye seed, ect. i've tried doing a search, but didn't find much. i know that HPoo and straw seem to be the best to use. but untill i get there, which seems to have better results and in what ways?
thanx for you info.

What are referred to as 'grains' here (WBS, Rye, Millet, Corn, etc.) are much faster colonizers. The downside is they REQUIRE a PC. The pro guys here PC grains, colonize them, and then spawn those colonized grains to Hpoo, straw, or something similar. Once that is fully colonized, they add a 'casing' layer. This layer gaurds against contams directly in the substrate and provides moisture. This is called a 'bulk' method because it allows you to use a large quantity of substrate and get larger yields.
Some of them add semi-nutritious additives to the casing such as coconut coir. This is a more advanced technique and I suggest you avoid it on your first couple of bulk grows.
BRF is a surer technique due to the lack of exposure the substrate gets during the lifetime and proceedures of the substrate. It requires less tools but takes longer.
I would suggest stepping out of the forums a bit and taking a look at the basic cultivation tek's, FAQs, and guides so you can get a clearer picture of what the hell we're talking about.
You'll find this information in the very top left of this webpage under 'mushroom information -> growing mushrooms'. Read everything under that and you will have many answers to the questions you haven't even asked yet.

I have read a ton of them. mostly the simpler grain ones. but i wanted to know if certain grains produced better yeilds or not. but i guessing they don't. as of right now i'm doing well with rye seed, so i'mguessing i should stick to that and not worry about tring WBS, if i'mjust growing small casings

Alot of people have great success with rye. In fact, it's one of the components of most wild bird seed. I think alot of growers go with WBS because it's so cheap.
I've been wanted to test out some rye only jars myself. Guess I'll have to find a hookup for it around here. My tests with safflower and sunflower seeds only BLOW! I highly don't recommend those spawn substrates.
Going to do cracked corn, dehydrated corn, and rye next.
Sorry for the ramble, I think the coffee's kicking in.

I get my rye at the health food store. $1.15 a pound. I have done rye and wbs and I have not seen alot of difference in colonization times.
