the economist...
Quote:
AMERICANS do not go in for envy. The gap between rich and poor is bigger than in any other advanced country, but most people are unconcerned. Whereas Europeans fret about the way the economic pie is divided, Americans want to join the rich, not soak them. Eight outof ten, more than anywhere else, believe that though you may start poor, if you work hard, you can make pots of money. It is a central part of the American Dream.
Quote:

The proportion who think you can start poor and end up rich has risen 20 percentage points since 1980.
as the chart clearly shows..optimism has increased even has the reality has taken the opposite direction...
nor should it come as any surprise that the much-despised freedom-hating european commy pinkoes are doing a better job of "joining the rich" than neocon amerikkka ..

Quote:
The effect of all this has been to scotch that long-cherished notion of the American Dream: that honest toil is enough to reap the rewards and let even the poorest join the middle class, or maybe even strike it rich. A survey last year showed that such economic mobility (a measure of those people trying to make the Dream come true) was lower in America than Canada, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland. In fact, the only country doing as bad as America was Britain (food for thought, there).
so the obvious ? is why americans continue to put so more and more faith in what is very clearly a failed policy (and moving to silence the argument against it.. as witness the impedning internet clampdown and the flag-burning amemdment)...voting for repugnicans is definitely not the way the "join the rich"...

Bush's approval ratings are in the toilet because of his betrayal of conservatism, NOT because he has lost the center. He has lost the right. Anna's graphs, by the way, elucidate nothing at all. Which doesn't surprise me, that Anna might generate conclusions out of thin air. It seems to be an ongoing pattern. I gotta change my sig now. Enough silversoul bashing
