Help with a horse dung loving shroom.
    #5756446 - 06/16/06 07:27 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

on my last hunt I found a horse dung nuggest that was almost completely dried out, but had pins on it growing. So I brought it home and watered it and put it in a tuperware conatiner. and to my surprise it grew. and now there are more pins sprouting. I Am scared to cut the biggest cap for a spore print because it isnt fully mature yet.

The cap is a very smooth dark brown fading to a light brown with a textured white ring at the bottom. The stem is white fading to light brown and very fiberous. Any help would be awesome, I am hoping so much for it to be active.

here is a pic

Whats with all this recent success in taking home poo?!

It's truly inspiring!  In any case, the largest cap is at too early a stage in that photo to be able to rule out possibly poisonous look-a-likes.  I know you're anxious, but just wait a bit longer till you know it's mature, and then do a spore print and let us know!

It's really hard to tell from the pics, but my first guess would also be Psilocybe coprophila.. not psychoactive.

How deep do you have to go to make sure you're getting all the mycelium? Is just the dung enough, or does the mycelium go deeper?

Hi, would like to point out that the majority of Panaeolus subbalteatus in oregon occurs in Composted hay and not directly in manure.

and all of the the other 17 species od fungi which do contain psilocine/psilocybine do not occur in manure but in manured ground and not directly in manure. That would be liberty caps and Psilocybe strictipes, and blue ringers (P. stuntzii, P. fiemtaria and P. sierrae), And then P. baeocystis. They all occur inn grassy areas in pasture, ands and meadows, along roadside growing with their mycelial roots attaches to wild grasses. That would be from late July Through December in Oregon and Washington and parts of B.C., Canada.

The baeosyctis and blue ringers also later int he fall (Sept-Oct) in woodchip mulch of alder and other hardwoods.

Then you have the P. cyanescens coming up in Oct through Dec in the PNW. In SF in Dec and january.

And several other minor species. There is no reason to bring manure paddies home if you live in the PNW.

mj

Thank you for the point . for some reason my growing is successful, it was definitely a surprise to me.  there are new pins sprouting an all.  Even if it is not active I am learning from the experience. if I end up with a purple print would you have any guesses?

PS: thank you for the helpful info.
