Two holes Vs. Four Holes

Ok, in Shroom Wizards tek he shows two holes punched in the lids. But in the PF tek for beginners it shows four holes. Can anyone tell me why two holes would be advantageous over four? And Vice-versa.

two holes is slightly safer from a contam point of view, the more times you inoculate a jar the higher your odds are of introducing a contam. if you use good clean procedures though its not a problem. more holes means more germination sites, and gives you more gas exchange, leading to faster growth. sometimes when you inoculate you'll have "blank" spots and you won't get growth at an inoculation site at all. i actually use 5 holes (in wide mouth jars) and get really fast growth that way. its a lot of matter of preference, you could use only one hole if you want, but 4 is just fine and what the majority has been using for a long long time with much success... it gives a good balance of contam safety, growth speed, without becoming too tedious to inoculate.

This brings up the importance of "points on inoculation" the more the better not only here but when spawning bulk substrates. Although 4 is plenty when doing the PFTek care must be taken not to over inoculate your jars thus throwing of it's moisture content. GL

hyphaem, I definitely did that on my first attempt. So many things went wrong on my first try. And that surely was one of them! So, far things are going 100% better this time around.

This type of growing is on a learning curve. I made the too damp mistake on my first jars, they still worked but took over a month to fully colonize. GL with your next one

Thanks for the empathy. You'll probably get a laugh over what I did. Well first I came here to the IRC java text chat thing and the only two people who responded told me the jars were F'd and I should start over. Well, being the rugged individualist that I am, I said to hell with that. I was determined to see some results. So, I took the lids off thinking that The protective layer of vermiculite would prevent any bacteria from getting in while the substrate dried out. Wrong. Pretty much all of my jars ended up contaminated. Now that I think back, I do think I might have been able to save them If I had been more attentive and replaced the lids sooner. Now only one jar remains with some good myc growth but has some cobweb issues Im pretty sure.

If it is cobweb it will over run the jar in less then 48 hours usally less then 24. You just might have a bad spot of myc, I know I did with my wet ones. Just watch it and it might turn out ok. GL

i was doing "pf tek" that was taught by a friend. i didnt even know the name of it and neither did my friend. i was always told just to draw a star on the top of the jar and make my holes there. always worked great.
