I do not have a print but will get if someone thinks I'm onto something. I did not pick this as there were only a few and i do not know what they are, but i know where they are located very well. They look to me, similar to amanita muscaria var. americana. amanita muscaria var americana pic form wikipedia But i have only ever tried amanitas once and it was in powdered form I've never seen (unless this is) other than in pics. I'm not asking for a positive ID I hardly expect someone to ID based purely on the pic however If I'm onto something let me know, And I will look further into identification of this. Also I might be wrong as to the var. americana its just a very uneducated guess. This was found outside Grand Rapids, MI about 10 Miles.

That looks like it. We need to see a picture of the base of the stem to be sure.

edit: shroomydan beat me to it, while I was typing it out! I agree though, dig up the base of the stem carefully and get a pic posted on here.

Here's the pic of the base of the stem. At the base of the stem you can see a very small bit of something yellowish this was around the whole thing but fell off very easily without touching.

One of the underside of the cap as well (veil still mostly attached but where ripped i can see that the gills are white).

Not Amanita muscaria. A. muscaria has concentric rings of veil remnant ascending the stem from a bulbous base. Your mushroom is likely A. flavaconia, which is poisonous.

The basal bulb on Muscaria "base with concentric zones of shaggyness"
Interesting find though - I didnt realise flavioconia could be so white fleshed.

in my region there are alot of amanita muscaria var. formosa whish usually grows from 8-20cm caps and i recently read at the library in an older book about amanita frostys<i dunno about this species but all i read that was different between both species is that these frostys only grow up to 7cm caps whic is a huge difference but all other aspects of the mushrooms seem to be identical except for the bulbous stem.....and is under the poisonous undelined species so i learnt something new just the other day!!!

i just wanted to share my experiences with amanita muscaria var formosa. i'm from michigan and usually come fall to early winter i can pick a quite a few of these i tried em twice and dont wish to try em again. The first time i tried em they made me puke and i didnt get any kind of buzz what so ever, so the second time i upped the dose to about 6 fresh mushrooms and they put me to asleep. all and all i can say this is one mushroom that is better to picture then take. it is very beautiful and elusive but as far as eating it leave it alone! I've read so many diff facts of it being posinous and being ok! i dont reccomend screwin with it as one who did brad

Have you ever tried to Heat them to alter the ibotenic acid to muscimole? I guess I've never heard of anyone eating them fresh. I'm curious to try, thats why I ask.
