So my friend and I packed and sterilized the jars last night (pressure cooked them at 15 PSI. We were following the PF tek, and after the cooking, set them out to cool.. It then dawned on me that we'd left out one procedure. After filling the Jars up with substrate and leaving the top half inch clear, we topped them off with dry vermiculite, but never wiped down the exposed insides. ""Be careful not to leave any substrate on the upper edge of the jar. If you weren't careful enough and there are some substrate specks at the edge take a clean moist cloth and wipe the upper portion of the jar clean. Otherwise contaminants can start at those spots and work their way down into the jar.""IS this a death sentence for the jars? should I start over?

When I first started, I did the exact same thing as you with 12 jars, and every one of them was fine. I'm sure it is easier for contams to take hold if there are specks of substrate at the top, but I don't think it is a certain "death sentence" for your jars. Make sure you are being as sterile as possible during inoculation, and I think you'll probably be fine.

Home made gloveboxes are super easy to make, and always help by adding an extra degree of sterility, so keep that in mind.

Thanks, guys.. I guess better safe than sorry.. Is it recommended to wait a couple of days after the jars have been cooked to inoculate them? That way if any contam is present, it'll make itself felt? I read that somewhere.

You would be supprised at how many newbie growers get contams...
from not wiping the inside lip of the pf jar before adding the dry verm barrier.

Over the years this is one of the first questions that I ask someone...
when I get a pm from a newbie asking what they might have done wrong!~

As soon as they start wiping the inside lip...their contam problems go away!~

So it is my opinion that not wiping the lip will add greatly to having a contam problem with the pf jars.

Thanks.. I don't want to risk it, I'll recook them tonight.. Do you suggest letting the jars chill for a couple of days as some manuals recommend to make sure nothing else gains a hold of them?

Well, I read enough to know not to pack it in.. Then again, I read enough to know to wipe the lip. It's okay.. After this time I won't be a newbie anymore.. And before you know it I'll get my own can of Pringles
