I only have a few days before the boyfriend's parents arrive. I have been smoking weed and not cleaning for the past week! I still need to scrub the walls!

I wanted a job with a landscaper this summer, but nobody was hiring. Is it a good job? What do you do for them?

most of the work i do is maintenance type stuff... trimming trees, pulling weeds, feeding plants, removing dead plants, etc etc.... every now and then i will get the chance to spread some rock, install a timer, fix some irrigation, dig some holes....basically im the bitch who does all the work no one else wants to. which is ok by me, its still better than burger king. though now that its summer my job is starting to lose some of its appeal. being outside all day in 100+ degree weather has its disadvantages.

That's almost exactly what I was trying to do this summer, manual labor and sun.

its hard work, thats for sure. everything in the desert either bites, stings, or pokes you. aint nothin nice. a few days ago i almost had a run in with a rattle snake. it was chillin inside a huge lantana bush that i was trimming. scared the fuck outa me. long sleeve shirts are a must, to avoid sun burn among other things, even though i often opt for a short sleeved one.
last week while wearing a short sleeved shirt we had to remove this huge blue agave. we cut it up with a chain saw and as i was hauling the pieces out to the truck i noticed my arms were starting to itch a bit. a little more time passes and i find my arms are now on FIRE. the juice inside this thing that got all over my arms caused a very painful rash. my skin started turning red and bubbling up in spots. i tried washing my arms with a garden hose but that didnt help at all. after about 45 minutes the pain started to go away, but it was still sore and itchy and all around quite uncomfortable for the rest of the day. damn that sucked.

they can be, depending on their location. when possible, we usually just tie them up to the back of our work truck and take off. if thats not possible we usually just dig around them a bit and cut them off below ground level then fill in the hole. out of sight, out of mind. no sense in spending the whole day digging the fucker out.

I saw a tree that grew around a fence and the fence is long gone except the part that sticks out of the tree. Kinda neat

I cut grass, do mulch, remove trees, plant gardens, make stone walls. The whole yard shabang.
Its a dirty job. But satisfying making my state beautiful one yard at a time. Payes good to if you work it right.
Its not a career i plan on persuing the rest of my life. But it pays the bills.

im only getting paid 7.50 an hour right now, which is pretty low as far as landscaping is concerned. but my knowledge and experience was next to none when i started, so im not complaining too much. im up for a raise in a few weeks. hopefully they will give me one high enough to make me want to stick around. i like working for them, really cool people and a well run business. if i dont get at least 8.25 im going to start looking around at some other landscaping places. there are so many around here im sure i could find one that would pay me better. especially now that ive racked up a bit of experience at my current job.
i dont really plan on digging trenches for my lifes career either, but when i think of the amount of money the owner of this company is making off of me and the others it gets me thinking....
starting my own little landscaping company might not be a bad idea later on down the road. i got alot experience that needs getting and a few trades i want to learn before i get to that point, but it is something i think i am capable of and wouldnt mind doing. all i would need to do, that is after i learn what i need to know to know what im doing...
is get the tools, the truck, a few employees, then its just a matter of lining up the work. it doesnt need to be anything big to generate the kind of money im looking for, im not greedy. just need enough clients to keep busy. im also throwing around the idea of doing a nursery too. there is money to be made in the landscaping business without having to be the one swinging the pick. and if i stick with it long enough that is where i want to be. if i dont get there, chances are i will can the landscaping for something different. the question is what.
lol, im rambling

ouch you get payed less then the mexican guys we hire sometimes. When i work with my buddy a couple days a week he payes me 13 an hour just to weed wack.
When you set out on your own, remeber to keep the start up low.
Get a diezel dump truck from the 80's. Get a cheap mower. and basic tools.
You dont want your profits going into your inventory for three years. I see to many young guys with a brand new mason dump at 30,000 with a 8,000 dollar mower, along with a nice enclosed trailer at 10,000. When you could spend a total of 10,000 dollars on all used equipment that will last you a good 10 years.
each good sized yard should earn you about 3,000 a year. I always try to work a contract deal of about 200 to 250 a month. then spring and fall cleanups at 250 a pop. then grass seeding and fertelising and 50 an aplication depending on size. Fertelising 4 times a year. Then doing weed control in the early spring. Mulch i do at 50 a yard. Costs me 10 for a yard. Plantings i take the cost of the materials and dubble it then charge a reasonable amount for the labor.
100 20$ lawns that take 20 minutes to cut is way more efficient then 50 1/2 acre residential lawns at 50 a cut.

ya im kind of getting screwed as far as pay goes, but then i came to this job from making 6.50 an hour at burger king. i dont think i need to get into detail about how much that job sucked. the company i work for is huge. they have been around since 1939, and as far as everyone around here is concerned they are the best. when i tell people i work for harlow gardens 90 percent of the time they know the place.
being as big as they are they can afford to pay people shit wages like me. if i were to quit it wouldnt really be a big deal to them. at any given time they have about 20 people working for them through day labor type places, they get paid even less than i do.
but at the same time, they do pay pretty well, at least to those who have been around for a while and know their shit. so i guess i will see. if they dont start throwing me raises here pretty soon, like i said, ill look elsewhere. all i need to concern myself with in the time being is learning as much as i can from the veterans there and staying on good terms with those who have authority.
and thanx for the business tips. thinking realistically, i am giving myself at least 5 years until i will be ready to go on that venture. and thats not taking into account what can happen from now till then. right now its more of a pipe dream than anything else. just some ideas im tossing around. i really do enjoy the work right now, hard as it is. so as far as career options go, thats the one im leaning towards.
