Off season Ice Fisherman lend me your ear!
    #5751930 - 06/14/06 11:45 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

I've found the perfect portable lab in my 4 man 9'X5'Shappell ice shanty. I've got an MS closet, a work bench,a comfortable hypoallergenic seat, and a glove box in mine, along with a HEPA filtration system. Most of my supplies fit right in there with some shelving that has been added. It just seems too good to be true. I haven't had the chance to use it yet, but I will very soon. Has anyone had any experience with using an ice shanty as a lab? I'm geeked! :mushroom2:

Oh yeah! Gotta watch out for Polar Bears! Actually it's in the basement. The shanty/lab is opaque, and completely light proof. It has to be because it doubles as a spearing shanty too. It's still a work in progress of course, but I can see a lot of potential. I don't want to damage or puncture it, but I think I can work around that. If I remember correctly it cost me around $250-$300 a couple of years ago. I'll send pics when I get my camera back for you folks to critique.

This brings back memories. Ten years or so ago, I spent a year just south of Duluth, MN working on an electrical job at a Potlatch paper mill. Those guys are some of the sport fishingest bastards I've ever met, and I love fishing. Every Sunday afternoon, we were out on the lake in the ice fishing shacks doing bong hits, drinking beer and whiskey and watching the packers and vikings games on TV. Sometimes we even fished.

In reality, all you need for sterile work is a small area you can clean up and run a flowhood or set up a glovebox. For the actual growing, your terrarium or greenhouse can be just about anywhere. Sterility is not required at that stage. I'd keep the ice fishing shack dedicated for drinking. . .er I mean fishing.

Ha! I know where you're talking about. I used to live there. Did you ever go catfishing down by the St. Louis river? Good times.

I used to have one of those little portable ice fishing houses. I never used it for a lab, but I know it works great for hotboxing. I remember being out on a lake one time and some snowmobiles drove up on us. When we opened the flap on the little two man ice house the smoke just rolled out. I was pretty young and totally blazed. It was a couple of older guys wanting to ask how the fishing was. We had a line in the water, but I think he realized we weren't really there for the fishing. Ha! To tell the truth most ice fishing is more about drinking and/or smoking than ice fishing.

Anyway, I think the ice house lab is a great idea. A tent might work well too, but an ice house is even better. Should be a lot easier to sterilize too. Excellent idea phlegmbae.

Oh I'm a dedicated ice fisherman, but my wife and neighbors think I'm nuts if I sit in my shanty set up in the garage this time of year. So I brought it inside. We still did bongs in there up until I came up with the idea. OK, the MSC is outta there. I'm just using the shanty for my sterile work now. There's no air current in there, and it's easy to sterilize. Plus I feel very confident of it's sterility when I use it.
