How do you find out the genus of a mushroom using a guide book like Mushrooms Demystified??????
    #5751651 - 06/14/06 10:36 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Hey guys i have the books Mushrooms Demystified and Psilocybin mushrooms of the world and i started not to long ago looking for mushrooms in the wild and MeadMadeMe suggested for me to post this question after i asked him how to do this but i was wondering useing any guide book they all are sorted by genus and show you how to find the species but how the hell do you find out the genus!!!!
this is my question:
How do you find the genus of an unID'ed mushroom using a book?? (or anything for that matter!!) i mean all i have are these books and the net but how does one go about finding the genus easily is there a tax. key that you can use??
ahh im high so yea im gonna leave it at that cuz i think i already wrote toooo much for just this simple question but yea i got the idea across i'll come back later. any ideas???
thanks guys(and chicks??)

There are keys in the front to genus......practice on the mushrooms you found by doing a couple of the basics by cutting off the stem leaving a little behind on the shroom then from the top cut the cap in half. When you look at it from the side are the gills attatched to the stem at all or completely free from it or only in contact with the cap ?

Then lay the cap flat gills down some paper one half of the cap on some white paper(for colored spores) and the other cap half on darker paper (for white spores) and see what color of the ultra fine powder (spores) it leaves behind on the paper (spore print). Overnight is best but sometimes can print very quikly.
Sometimes covering the cap can help reduce drafts that blow some of the spores away taking longer for a print so sometimes covering helps.

Also always want to check to see if base of stem is growing out of any kind of bag or sac at the ground level before you pick it.

this should get you started with the keys in the front of the book.

just post any questions on this thread.

Keys are helpful and I have used them a lot in the past.

A lot of times keys call for advanced measures.. microscopic features, chemicals, etc. So for beginners, there will be a point in certain keys where you may get stuck or unsure.

Just becoming familiar with each individual genus (or the more common ones at least) over time has helped me a lot. You can study some of the common genera by reading up a lot and individual focus on them. Take a day or two and just focus on one genus. It takes a lot of time and can be overwhelming.
Experience picking mushrooms from each genus and identifying them helps, even if you need help identifying it. That way you will get hands on experience.

PMOTW has a simple and easy to follow key to dark spored mushrooms.

Like already stated, the keys to the genus are in the front of the book. He has a few outlines of the look of a mushroom, as well as the spore print color and which genus it might be. I think the ones in bold mean that they are more commonly found.

Honestly, when mushroom hunting or looking on this board, you really only see the same 10 genus over and over. The more abstract mushrooms are generally harder to find. Although, it is great fun when you find something weird and can key it out in a book.

I remember finding one of these for the first tme: The cauliflower mushroom.

The others have all given good advice on this.

I just want to add that identification of a mushroom to genus is often as far as you'll ever get with a lot of mushrooms. Even with professionals it's common (at a mushroom fair or in the field) to simply ID to genus and stop there.

Also, allow that accurately identifying mushrooms to genus varies from trivial to impossible, depending on the mushroom. Some of them you can tell at a distance in an instant. Others (LBMs are notorious for this) you may never ID, even with a microscope and plenty of time on your hands.

Some books not regularly referenced but among the best for learning this are:

How to Identify Mushrooms to Genus (this is a series of books)
Keys to Agarics and Boleti (by Meinhard Moser)

The How to Identify Mushrooms to Genus series are relatively small and inexpensive books. The first couple volumes use only macroscopic features and the next couple show how to do it with a microscope.

Happy mushrooming!
